It wasn't much of a surprise when Dwight Howard left the Lakers in July to join the Houston Rockets. Howard never seemed truly happy as a Laker, and the Rockets were a natural destination. According to Howard, his former Orlando Magic coach, Stan Van Gundy, was a vital confidant guiding him to leave for Houston. "I talked to Stan a lot during last season," Howard told the Houston Chronicle. "During the off-season, we talked and he felt like the system that would fit me best and the coaching staff would be Houston.

Nearly six months after it appeared their relationship would be forever strained, Stan Van Gundy and Dwight Howard provided tangible proof it wouldn't. The Orlando Sentinel's Mike Bianchi reported that the former Magic coach sought out Howard for help in raising property taxes in Seminole County, Fla., to aid public schools. "Dwight has pledged his support," Van Gundy said. "He's a resident of Seminole County, and he's keeping his house here. I think his history will show that he's had great concern for kids in the Central Florida community.

Stan Van Gundy is kind of a grouch. The now-former coach of the Orlando Magic may not always have had the best of relationships with his players, particularly a certain superstar the organization is trying desperately to keep beyond next season. But is that a good enough reason to fire a coach who led the team to a 259-135 record and playoff appearances in all five of his years with the team, including the Eastern Conference championship in 2009? Chief Executive Alex Martins may have suggested as much while announcing Van Gundy's firing, as well as an agreement to part ways with six-year general manager Otis Smith on Monday.  “It's time for a new leadership and a new approach,” Martins said.

Orlando Magic Coach Stan Van Gundy said Thursday he has been told by high-ranking team officials that star center Dwight Howard has previously asked that he be fired. "I know he has," Van Gundy told reporters after the team's morning shootaround ahead of Thursday night's matchup with the New York Knicks, won by the Knicks, 96-80. "That's just the way it is. Again, I've been dealing with that all year. It's not anything real bothersome. You go out and do your job. " Howard has denied reports that he has asked for Van Gundy's dismissal.

NBA champion Flynn Robinson died Thursday after a battle with cancer. Robinson, who played with the Lakers during their 1971-72 championship season, contributed to the team's historic 33-game win streak. "My favorite memory is the 1971 draft, when they said, 'Flynn has been traded to Los Angeles,' said Robinson in an interview that can be found in the audio vault of veteran radio personality Ted Sobel , recorded in December 2012. Robinson was traded from the Cincinnati Royals, spending just one year with the Lakers.

The Lakers need more from franchise center Dwight Howard . "Howard's got to get going," said ABC/ESPN analyst Jeff Van Gundy in a phone conversation with The Times. "He's capable of giving so much more. " "I think he has to focus in on performance more than image," he said. "I think he's probably been a little bit overwhelmed - you can say you want a big market, but not everybody is made for a big market. " A free agent this summer, Howard has yet to state his long-term intentions.

According to Jeff Schultz of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution , Dwight Howard Sr. believes his son, Dwight Howard, will re-sign with the Lakers this summer as a free agent. Howard Sr. spoke out for his son on the recent controversy surrounding Howard's shoulder injury, criticizing both Kobe Bryant and Coach Mike D'Antoni. "Nobody can say what Kobe said -- that's stepping into another man's shoes," Howard Sr. said. "I understand what Kobe was trying to do, but he went about it the wrong way. He's trying to win a championship, but Dwight has to tell Kobe, 'I appreciate your opinion, but that doesn't matter.

Dwight Howard is looking forward to the arrival of Lakers Coach Mike D'Antoni, after days of speculation that the team would hire Phil Jackson. "I really didn't know what was going to happen, besides what I heard at the game, 'We want Phil,'" said Howard, echoing the chants from the fans at Staples Center. Howard, who had a contentious relationship with former Orlando Magic coach Stan Van Gundy has tried to stay politically correct through the Lakers' journey from Mike Brown to interim coach Bernie Bickerstaff and now to D'Antoni.

The man of many imitations suddenly felt a loss for words. Lakers center Dwight Howard has relished any chance he has to imitate Kobe Bryant's serious demeanor. Howard shared it at his introductory press conference. He continued last week when he appeared on "Ellen. " During the 2008 Olympics, Howard often mimicked the Lakers star on the team bus and in the locker room. On cue, Howard often has mimicked Stan Van Gundy's high-shrieked yell, Charles Barkley's enunciation of the word "Turrible," and Shaquille O'Neal's monotone voice.

Orlando Magic Coach Stan Van Gundy doesn't feel as if he's in a showdown against Lakers Coach Phil Jackson. "I don't think coaches ever match up," Van Gundy said. "If Coach Jackson and I were out there one-on-one. . . . He was an NBA player and I was a below-average Division III player in college, so my guess is the advantage would go to him. "[Jackson's] bad hips might even it up a little, but probably not enough to make a difference.

The same deal brought both Dwight Howard and Chris Duhon from the Orlando Magic to the Lakers, yet their arrivals nearly juxtaposed each other. The Lakers immediately held an introductory news conference for Howard. Duhon didn't have one. The Magic fans feel betrayed by Howard's mixed messages the last year on his playing future. Hardly anyone said anything about Duhon. The Lakers believe Howard's the final piece they need to win a championship and their next franchise player. Duhon's just hoping he can share some minutes with Steve Blake at backup point guard.
