For a few terrifying moments in the early morning hours of the recent Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, authorities in Los Angeles were concerned that terrorists had launched an attack in a downtown subway station. Several people had been overcome by a cloud of noxious gas, causing at least two of them to begin vomiting and a Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy to experience a burning sensation in his eyes and lungs.

When Lilibet Snellings moved to Los Angeles at age 22, she quickly became a "slash": a writer/editor/actress/model/waitress/Box Girl. One night every week, Snellings would go to the Standard Hotel in West Hollywood, put on a pair of white boy shorts and a matching tank top and crawl into a large glass box in the hotel lobby. While in the box, she could do whatever she wanted - write, check e-mails, read, listen to music - as long as she ignored the hotel guests who would curiously point at the human art installation in front of them.

Two couples, both from out of town, linger on the same park bench, gazing up at gauzy curtains in the windows of a 19-story hotel. They don't know each other, but there they are, on a sunny Labor Day afternoon, hoping to steal a glimpse of, well, for lack of a more delicate way to put it, naked people. Voyeurism became New York's hot attraction this summer after guests were photographed in the buff prancing about, even having sex, in front of floor-to-ceiling windows at the Standard Hotel in the hip Meatpacking District.

With reference to Carla Hall's "Downtown, a New Standard in Hip Hotels" (Weekend Escape, July 7): Hall must have visited a different Standard hotel from the one some friends and I visited. Instead of a "hot hangout," I found the rooftop bar area provided inadequate seating, rude waitresses, watered-down drinks and minute food portions at exorbitant prices. Instead of "hip downtowners," I found boys and girls playing at being "hip." The only part of Hall's story with which I concur is the quote from a local artist, "Wow, you're really slumming."

Southern California must be full of top chefs. Or at least those who wish to be. The lineup for this season's " Top Chef " television show on Bravo again is well-larded with Angelenos. Competing in Season 10 (shouldn't they have advanced to Roman numerals by now?) will be Micah Fields , executive chef at the Standard Hotel ; Brooke Williamson , chef and owner at Hudson House in Redondo Beach and the Tripel in Playa del Rey; and Kuniko Yagi , who is billed as “executive chef at an upcoming David Myers restaurant.

This month's inauguration of the SBE/Insomniac venture Create considerably raised the stakes in the local EDM club world. The venue was slow to announce its schedule at first, but the bookings have come as fast and furious as a Vin Diesel summer action flick: Thomas Gold on Friday; John Dahlback on Saturday; the striking duo (and onetime Britney Spears tour mates) Nervo on June 8; HARD fest veteran Nicky Romero on June 17; R3HAB on June 29. On top of all that, the new Sunday Sessions was a big success in bringing avant-garde dance music to the modernist fuchsia finery of downtown L.A.'s Grand Park.

Lindsay Lohan plus a nightclub equals bad mojo, it seems, no matter what she's actually doing at the place. Lilo, who just two weeks ago was accused of shoving a woman at the Smoke & Mirrors club at the Standard hotel on Sunset, allegedly wound up on the wrong side of a thrown drink at that same club Wednesday night, where she'd been hanging out in a booth with dad Michael Lohan (apparently, they're speaking again). Michael had joined his daughter at the Standard, according to TMZ , after a friend who was driving her car hit another car in the Standard parking garage and Lindsay called him for help.

At 4 p.m. on a stereotypically beautiful Saturday afternoon in downtown Los Angeles on the rooftop pool of the Standard Hotel, the Gaslamp Killer was already midway through his second DJ set of the day ? playing a mix of challenging dubstep and crowd friendly Southern hip-hop to a crowd of sun-kissed hipsters. If you reserve a hotel room and fail to show up, your credit card gets charged for the room. If you buy an airline ticket and don't show up at the gate before takeoff, the best you can get is credit toward a future flight. But if you reserve a rental car and don't show up, in most cases you walk away free of any charges. That may change soon, however. Stung by tough economic times, the rental car industry, led by Avis and Budget, is considering imposing new charges for customers who make reservations and fail to show up at the scheduled pickup time.
