A fugitive accused of shooting a man to death outside a Stanton bar in 2005 and televised on "America's Most Wanted" was arrested in Phoenix and returned to Orange County, where he was charged with murder Thursday, authorities said. Cuong Viet Nguyen, 27, formerly of Garden Grove, faces one felony county of murder and one felony count of attempted murder in addition to enhancements related to the discharge of a firearm causing death and great bodily injury.

The owners and managers of a Stanton apartment complex that fined families $50 and threatened them with eviction notices when their children played outside agreed Friday to pay $618,000 to settle a housing discrimination lawsuit. In the class-action suit, nine families alleged that Plaza Patria Court Ltd., the owner of the Plaza Court Apartments, targeted families by fining them if their children were outside unsupervised, playing on the grass or taking out the trash.

Two Garden Grove sisters appeared to have made a "miraculous recovery" Monday after their family's car was hit from behind by a pickup truck driven by a man suspected of being under the influence of marijuana, authorities said. "Both are off life support and doing rather well," Jim Amormino, a spokesman for the Orange County Sheriff's Department, said of Brittany Figueroa, 11, and her sister, Ariana, 6. "Kids bounce back fast, and they did. It's incredible."

Authorities were searching Saturday for the mother of a newborn who was found in some bushes Friday night. Using bloodhounds, deputies combed the area around Santa Gertrudes Avenue near Santa Cruz Street where the boy was discovered about 10:45 p.m. by a woman who lives nearby, authorities said. The child, wrapped in a blanket with his umbilical cord still attached, was believed to be only a few hours old, police said.

Orange County sheriff's deputies were searching Saturday for the mother of a newborn found in bushes in a residential area. The boy, with his umbilical cord attached, was found about 10:45 p.m. Friday on Santa Gertrudes Avenue near Santa Cruz Street. He was recovering from hypothermia in a hospital Saturday.

Donna Trujillo was preparing Christmas goody bags early Wednesday morning for children at her son's preschool when she realized she needed more candy. After a trip to Walgreens, Trujillo returned home with the candy. But the bags would never be finished. A predawn blaze gutted her four-bedroom Stanton house shortly before 2 a.m. in the 10900 block of Beach Boulevard, forcing the Trujillo family of seven to scramble to escape while their possessions were turned to ash.

A 21-year-old man was killed and a teenager wounded in shootings in Stanton early Saturday, officials said. Police did not release the victims' names. Officers were called about 1 a.m. to the area of Santa Gertrudes Avenue and Santa Maria Street where they found the body of a man, said Orange County Sheriff's Lt. Ted Boyne. An hour later they found the wounded 17-year-old about a block away. He was hospitalized at UCI Medical Center and was expected to recover, Boyne said.

A man was fatally shot on a school playground late Wednesday by a gunman who fled on a bicycle, police said. He remained at large Thursday night. Julio Alberto Hernandez, 24, a transient, was found about 9 p.m. at Carver Elementary School, police said. He was taken to Western Medical Center-Anaheim, where he died, police said. A man wearing a baseball cap and believed to be the gunman was seen leaving the scene, officials said.

Mayor Harry M. Dotson, first elected to the City Council in 1990, died Wednesday, one day after his 79th birthday, authorities said. Dotson, a retired civil service investigator and conservation officer, was taken to a hospital Tuesday afternoon for an unspecified ailment. Dotson's city service began in 1976 with his appointment to the planning commission. He is survived by his daughter, Barbara, and son, Thomas. Funeral services are pending.

An 11-year-old Los Angeles girl missing overnight was found walking down a Stanton street Monday in the company of a 37-year-old man. Police conducted an intensive search for the girl after she was seen running from a South Los Angeles park about 10 p.m. Sunday with a man identified as Rafael Vasquez Garcia. The two were spotted about noon, said Deputy Luis Castro of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.
