Savanna Unified School District has told the city it cannot build a skateboard park on district property, Mayor Al Ethans said. The Community Services Commission had recommended the Stanton Municipal Tennis Courts--property that is owned by the district--as a possible site for building a park. Ethans said despite the setback, the city won't abandon its commitment to building a skateboard park and will continue searching for an appropriate site. "We're not giving up.

City officials said they will have to start over on finding a site to build a skateboard park. Officials had hoped a park could be built at Stanton Park, owned by Southern California Edison Co. An architect had even prepared plans for a park at that location. But late last week, City Manager Terry Matz learned that Edison prohibits skateboard facilities on its land because of liability fears. Matz said that previous discussions with Edison officials had been positive.

Skateboarding is highlighting the differences between young and old in Stanton. On Tuesday night, a few residents of Stanton Park, a 130-unit townhouse development off Cerritos Avenue, took their complaints to the City Council, saying that kids, and their skateboards, make too much noise. The residents requested that the council ban skateboarding on their streets.

The City Council today will receive conceptual drawings for a skateboard park at Stanton Park. Stanton Park is leased to the city by Southern California Edison Co. Edison officials are asking to see the drawings before they give approval for Stanton to build the park.
