In an ebullient display of civic pride, the City Council threw a party this week to celebrate 40 years of cityhood. The anniversary was commemorated with a cake and a rousing chorus of "Happy Birthday" for the city, led by Mayor William C. Estrada, during a break in Tuesday's council meeting. Several former council members joined the festivities, including Henry Mendez, one of the city's founding fathers.

While 1950s rock music played in the background, hundreds of residents turned out Monday night to celebrate the city's 35th birthday. For the celebration, held at the city's cultural arts and recreation center, city officials produced a video retrospective featuring clips from newspaper stories about Stanton written over the years. The video showed that much in the city has changed since it was incorporated in 1956, including the population, which has jumped from 1,500 to 30,000.

Briana Renee Welch, 3, of Anaheim was certain sure she would find the golden egg at the Easter egg hunt Saturday morning. * "We were trying to prepare her for the fact that she might not get the egg," said Dee Hill. And yet, there was Hill, holding the 3-foot stuffed silver bunny her granddaughter had won for finding the prized egg under some dead leaves. More than 250 children took part in the annual Easter Egg Hunt sponsored by Stanton's American Legion Post No. 783.

The city will hold a celebration at the new Civic Center on Wednesday and provide tours of the $5-million facility. The city began operating July 26 in the new building at 7800 Katella Ave., across Cedar Street from the public library. The building and adjoining parking garage were paid for with redevelopment money. Some residents protested the Civic Center when it was first planned in early 1990.

When young women from around the area vie for the title of Miss Stanton next week, the judges will have more than the usual evening gowns and swimwear to guide them. For the first time, contestants must also offer a "platform" of political or personal beliefs. Alex Telson, an 18-year-old student at Rancho Santiago College, already knows what she's going to talk about: graffiti, or more precisely, getting rid of it. "We pretty much had a war with taggers in our neighborhood," she said.
