Electronic transaction processing company Concord EFS Inc. said it will buy payments network Star Systems Inc. for $863.2 million in stock, creating a coast-to-coast cash machine debit system. The Star network, based in Maitland, Fla., is the largest U.S. payments network secured by personal identification numbers, or PINs. Star has 3,500 financial institutions as members and operates in 22 states, mostly in the West, Southwest and Southeast. Memphis, Tenn.

Most Americans believe the year 2000 computer problem will have little or no effect on their finances or their local cash machine come Jan. 1, a recent survey shows. The upbeat report by research company Gallup comes as U.S. banks and financial companies--some of the best-prepared companies to face the year 2000--reassure customers that their banking systems will be working after Dec. 31.

A canker and cold sore medication called Zilactin is getting its first exposure to national publicity, thanks in part to a Newport Beach firm's innovative venture-marketing concept. The over-the-counter medicated gel, approved by the Federal Drug Administration for use on herpes simplex I ailments, had been in development nearly 5 years and had exhausted the funds of the chronically undercapitalized Zila Pharmaceuticals in Phoenix.
