Gentle Jedi--start your sleeping bags. "Star Wars" fans will have more than a dozen places in Orange County to camp out for "Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace" before it opens May 19. All will hold midnight screenings to draw the earliest of the early birds trying to be among the first to see the latest installment of George Lucas' mythological westerns in space. One fan in Los Angeles began camping out last month--six weeks ahead of time.

For 21/2 years, first-time filmmaker Jon Shenk followed one of Hollywood's most enigmatic and influential figures during the making of "Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace." The result, a one-hour documentary called "The Beginning," about George Lucas and the making of his blockbuster prequel, is arguably more entertaining than the auteur's $115-million epic. (Comparing them is easy because the one-hour documentary is available only on the recently released DVD version of "Phantom Menace."

Riding the media buzz for "Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace," LucasArts Entertainment, a wholly owned division of George Lucas' Lucasfilm Ltd., next week will release games based on the film, which opens Wednesday. In 1995, before the movie script was finished, Lucas and Jack Sorensen, president of LucasArts, began coordinating the games over regular lunch meetings at the filmmaker's San Rafael, Calif., ranch.

Fox Entertainment Group Inc. and Lucasfilm Ltd. said they will show a digital version of the latest "Star Wars" in four U.S. theaters later this month, the first time a fully digital movie will be shown to the public. Texas Instruments Inc. and CineComm Digital Cinema will provide their competing digital projection systems to screen "Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace" on two screens in Los Angeles and two screens in New York starting June 18.

They don't tell you where the screening is. You get on a bus, which whisks you to the theater, in a multiplex in lower Manhattan. There you're led through several checkpoints, past unsuspecting masses arriving to see "The Mummy" or "The Matrix." At an unmarked theater on the upper level, one security guy examines your pass under an ultraviolet light. Another stamps "20th Century Fox" on your right hand. Then you're in.

The sky didn't fall. Computers didn't fail. Time did not grind to a halt. But millions of people put their lives on hold to see "Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace" on Wednesday, giving the film the projected largest one-day box office total in history. Motivated in part by enough pre-release publicity to swamp a Death Star, workers and students across North America played "Wookie Hooky," as some are calling it (even though there are no wookies in the movie).
