All aboard! "Starlight Express" will chug into the Orange County Performing Arts Center next season for a two-week run, April 3 to 15, immediately following a run at the Pantages Theatre in Los Angeles. The Andrew Lloyd Webber musical will start a 28-city tour in Cincinnati on Nov. 7 with stops in Cleveland, Pittsburgh, St. Louis and at least a half-dozen other places before reaching Costa Mesa.

True, Nolan is responsible for the 77-person cast and crew of Andrew Lloyd Webber's mammoth touring musical, which skates into the Pantages Theatre Thursday through April 1 (and then on to the Orange County Performing Arts Center April 4-16). But it is not safe sex that the non-lubricated Trojans are ordered to ensure, but safe sound.

"The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe" will end in Los Angeles. Lily Tomlin will return her one-woman epic to her home town next month, playing the Wilshire Theatre in Beverly Hills April 14-29 (on a Thursday-Sunday schedule), with previews beginning April 11. The engagement will precede a three-week filming of the show, at a yet-to-be-determined Los Angeles sound stage. Tomlin expects it to be her final "Search."

"Me and My Girl" and "Les Miserables," two lavish British musicals, topped the list of 1987 Tony award nominations, announced Monday by the American Theater Wing. The wing also announced that this year's resident-theater Tony will go to the San Francisco Mime Troupe. Another special Tony will go to Jackie Mason, whose "The World According to Me" began in Los Angeles.
