Paragon Cable, Orange County's second-largest cable operator, said Wednesday that it plans to offer a televised TV listing service by the end of March. Subscribers to the StarSight service will be able to use their TV remote controls to search for the name of a program, a specific channel or a category, such as sports or children's shows. Subscribers will then be able to record the program by pushing one button. The on-screen listing will be updated daily for the next week.

A unit of Pioneer Corp. that sells TV cable boxes has sued Gemstar-TV Guide International Inc., claiming that the largest seller of TV-guide software is competing unfairly. Pioneer Digital Technologies alleges that Gemstar is violating California law by "systematically eliminating competition and entering into agreements with others to restrain trade" in the market for TV programming technology.

Gemstar-TV Guide International Inc.'s former general counsel has sued the publisher of TV Guide magazine, claiming that he was fired after cooperating with a federal investigation of the company's accounting. Jonathan Orlick says he was fired June 5 "without cause" after he attempted to retrieve from his office several documents that the Hollywood-based company failed to provide to the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Gemstar International Group, maker of VCR Plus+, will buy its chief competitor, StarSight Telecast Inc., in a deal valued at about $255 million. The acquisition would make Fremont-based StarSight a wholly owned subsidiary of Gemstar, which is based in Pasadena. The combined company would have annual sales of roughly $55 million and about 300 employees after a small number of layoffs, company officials said.
