The State of Wisconsin Investment Board has acquired a 5.7% interest in Newhall Land & Farming Co., a Valencia-based real estate development and agricultural concern. The board, which manages trust funds held for the Wisconsin Retirement System, said in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission that it purchased 2.1 million Newhall shares for investment purposes. The total amount paid for the shares was not disclosed but, at Newhall's recent trading price of $16.

A major pension fund has cut its stake in Calabasas-based Xircom Inc. by about 154,200 shares. Between Nov. 2 and 9, the State of Wisconsin Investment Board, which manages funds for Wisconsin state employees, sold off about 1% of its holdings in Xircom and now owns 7.6% of the firm, or 1.1 million common shares. The divested shares were sold for $9 to $9.50 each.

The board, which manages retirement funds for Wisconsin state employees, sold the shares between Aug. 19 and Oct. 6 for $4.13 to $5.25 each, according to a Securities and Exchange Commission filing.

The state of Wisconsin Investment Board has purchased a 5.4% stake in Tokos Medical Corp., the Santa Ana company that makes and distributes a device to help detect the onset of premature labor. The investment board, which manages pension funds for Wisconsin state employees, purchased the stake between Oct. 29 and Dec. 3 for $15.20 to $18.37 a share, according to a Securities and Exchange Commission filing.

The State of Wisconsin Investment Board has increased its stake in Xircom Inc., a Calabasas company that makes electronic components to link personal computers, according to a Securities and Exchange Commission filing. The Wisconsin Investment Board, which manages pension funds for Wisconsin state employees, acquired 191,800 shares of Xircom common stock between Oct. 27 and Nov. 2 for $8.66 to $9 each. The stock purchases brought the board's total Xircom holdings to 951,800 common shares, or 6.

The State of Wisconsin Investment Board has lifted its holdings in Pinkerton's Inc. to 5% of the Van Nuys-based provider of security guards and services. The board, which manages retirement funds for Wisconsin state employees, said in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission that it purchased an additional 224,000 Pinkerton's shares between June 18 and Aug. 18. The board paid between $15.25 and $16.21 a share for the stock, the filing stated.

State Stake in Western Digital: The State of Wisconsin Investment Board has acquired a 5.1% stake in Western Digital Corp. for investment purposes, according to a Sept. 4 filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The public pension fund for government and school employees in Wisconsin said it purchased 500,000 shares of Western Digital common stock on Aug. 13 and Aug. 14 at prices ranging from $3.75 a share to $3.83 a share.
