Re "Beef goes high steaks," April 9 In order to appreciate the article on the price of beef, it helps to know math and statistics. As a mathematics professor at Cal State Long Beach, perhaps I can help. The price of beef rose from $4.91 to $5.28 in one year. That's an increase of about 7.5%. Since Feb. 8, gasoline prices in Los Angeles have risen from an average of $3.58 a gallon to $4.14, a 15.6% increase in a much shorter period of time, and gasoline is a larger fraction of most people's budget than beef.

The long-awaited Rand Corp. study of Obamacare's effect on health insurance coverage was released Tuesday and confirmed the numbers that had been telegraphed for more than a week : At least 9.3 million more Americans have health insurance now than in September 2013, virtually all of them as a result of the law. That's a net figure, accommodating all those who lost their individual health insurance because of cancellations. The Rand study confirms other surveys that placed the number of people who lost their old insurance and did not or could not replace it -- the focus of an enormous volume of anti-Obamacare rhetoric -- at less than 1 million.

Mike Scioscia might be perceived as more old-school than computer geek, but the Angels manager does study in-depth batting statistics. With Howie Kendrick, the research is paying dividends. “Some of the stuff is very good, and it can help you slot and match guys up,” Scioscia said. “You have to address where the pieces fit.” Scioscia moved Kendrick from second to sixth in the batting order April 30, and the second baseman is batting .333 since heading into Thursday's afternoon contest against the Chicago White Sox at Angels Stadium.

Consumers account for about two-thirds of U.S. economic activity, so it's always cool when we're out, you know, consuming. And the latest government figures show we're doing more of that. Retail sales jumped a healthy 1.1% last month, nearly double January's 0.6% advance, according to the Commerce Department. That's the good news. The not-so-good news is that a big chunk of that spending was at the pump as gas prices continued marching northward. Take away gas purchases from the equation, and retail sales were up only 0.8%.

Four points, 11 rebounds, four blocked shots. That was center Mamadou Ndiaye's contribution last week in 33 minutes toward UC Irvine's 46-44 victory over Long Beach State. It might be the most deceiving box score line in college basketball this season. "I don't think I've ever seen anybody influence a game more than he did and only score four points," Long Beach Coach Dan Monson said of Ndiaye, a 7-foot-6, 300-pound freshman who is the tallest player in the nation. "He even altered some shots when he wasn't in the game.

PHOENIX - It makes Lakers fans cringe to remember the Smush Parker era, a two-year span decidedly more goofy than golden and characterized by first-round playoff knockouts via the Phoenix Suns. But what's Parker up to these days? Can the Lakers sign him for a few weeks? Down to their fifth-string point guard, the Lakers rode the lead horse in a turnover parade Saturday against Golden State, committing 24 turnovers with only 11 assists, one of the most unbalanced assist-to-turnover ratios in team history.

It was regarded as a foregone conclusion: Marqise Lee would finish this season as USC's all-time receptions leader then head off to the NFL. Lee had caught a school-record 118 passes and won the Biletnikoff Award as a sophomore. The All-American needed only about half as many this season to supplant friend and mentor Robert Woods atop the career receptions list and perhaps make good on former coach Lane Kiffin's proclamation that he was the greatest receiver in Trojans history. After suffering injuries and enduring Kiffin's firing, Lee fell out of contention to repeat his postseason honors.

Lakers rookie forward Ryan Kelly scored 21 points in defeat as the D-Fenders (0-2) fell to the Warriors on Saturday in Santa Cruz (4-1), 122-112. Kelly is currently on D-League assignment, playing his second game for the D-Fenders, who travel to Bakersfield on Sunday to play the Jam (1-3). Instead of sitting on the bench with the Lakers on their recent three-game road trip, Kelly had the opportunity to play over 39 valuable minutes with the D-Fenders. His time on the court with the Lakers has been limited to just two games and seven total minutes.

ST. LOUIS -- For the hard-core baseball fan, this was the finest in inside humor. On last week's episode of the NBC comedy "Parks and Recreation," the fake law firm name was " Babip, Pecota, Vorp and Eckstein ," a nod to three sabermetric concepts and David Eckstein, the former Angels infielder who defied them. In the entertainment department of Major League Baseball, this was an opportunity. So MLB one-upped the fake law firm name with a fake commercial , rounding up Eckstein and handing him a script in which he poked fun at his sabermetric reputation as a scrappy, high-grit, low-talent player.

I read an article by Martin Henderson on a basketball computer simulation. I don't believe that Brea-Olinda's girls' team could ever come close to beating any high school all-star team. I don't know where the statistics came from, but I do know one thing, and that is that Jessica Eggleston's stats must have been manipulated by someone. When was the last time Eggleston scored two measly points in a game for Cypress High? She was Orange County's leading scorer for the last two years.

Unbuckling the mailbag: Question: I hope you and the media start a campaign to stop the NCAA scheduling these massacre football games. It is a scam, a sham and a shame. . . . Urban Meyer has the guts leading, 55-0, to go for it on fourth and six? He should be suspended for a game for that humiliation. Bobby Herbeck Answer: I'll start the campaign about these silly "paycheck" games, but first things first: You owe the Ohio State coach a big apology. Meyer did not - I repeat, did NOT - allow his team to "go for it" on fourth and six with the Buckeyes leading, 55-0, last week against Florida A&M. Ohio State was up only 48-0 at the time, and it was fourth and five.
