Well, this is awkward. Actress Gwyneth Paltrow and her musician husband, Chris Martin of Coldplay, bought a house in Malibu for $14 million, then they turned around and announced their "conscious uncoupling. " Uncoupling papers will no doubt eventually reveal who gets the John Lautner-designed home, which is set on a secluded acre of land and surrounded by tropical landscaping. The forward-thinking architect designed such structures as the octagonal Chemosphere house in Los Angeles and the poured-concrete Elrod Residence in Palm Springs.

The producers of a drama series scheduled to debut on NBC next Saturday criticized the network Friday for deciding this week to delete the opening scene in order to respond to what the network described as "certain constituencies . . . that would find elements of the opening dialogue offensive." They said that the scene in the "Sisters" pilot had been in NBC's hands for a year and had been approved for broadcast until objections were voiced by advertisers and affiliates.

Gregg Popovich kicked Stephen Jackson off his team last spring. Eight months later, he stole Jackson's headband. The latter deed actually triggered a smile from Jackson on Monday night at Staples Center during a playful exchange between the coach and his former player. Moments after Popovich's San Antonio Spurs lost to Jackson's Clippers, 115-92, the coach walked behind Jackson and swiped his blue headband, removing it from Jackson's head with his right hand.

Los Angeles fitness buffs were steaming Friday over the sudden shutdown of saunas at workout centers operated by the YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles. All saunas and steam rooms were ordered permanently shuttered Tuesday by YMCA officials. The closure followed a June 4 fire that authorities say began in a sauna and caused $1 million in damage to the Westchester YMCA. But YMCA administrators claim that heath issues--not fire-safety concerns--prompted the closure order.

For millions of Americans, a few minutes in the sauna or steam room is akin to therapy: They bare themselves, get good advice, sweat a little--and walk out minutes later feeling somehow cleansed. If there are serious health risks from all that heat, they seem mostly reserved for bad guys in old mobster films who got locked in. Yet YMCA officials now say otherwise. Late last month, the YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles abruptly and permanently shut down all its steam rooms and saunas.

During Henry's business trip to Amsterdam, Dutch associates invite him to relax in the hotel's spa. When he enters the steam room wearing a bathing suit, the Dutch men insist that Henry completely disrobe. Later, when women arrive to use the steam room, also naked, only Henry is startled. What does it mean? Modesty rules vary greatly, and most Americans are surprised at how much more free European men and women are about exposing their bodies.

I am stuck on the freeway at rush hour, and I hate men. I spent the entire day on the phone listening to arguments, excuses and coaxings. All from men. Men I work with, men I play with, men I pay to fix my car. I want to run away to a mountaintop and live with the bears. Female bears. Instead, I am heading to an unlovely stretch of Pico Boulevard, west of La Brea Avenue, to visit City Spa, which I am suddenly not sure is a good idea.

I tell Valentina it's my first time in a banya and that I've forgotten to bring birch branches. "Oh, I'll flog you with mine," she says, offering typical Russian hospitality. She begins whacking my back as we sit on long wood benches in the parilka (steam room). Whack! Whack! Whack! The beatings continue for a minute or two as green bits fly about. I wince. "Now it's my turn," she says. I return the favor but am timid. Valentina could be my mother. "Harder!" she says.
