Steelmaker to Pay $2-Million Penalty: Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corp. agreed to pay a $2-million civil penalty to settle charges that the company violated pollution standards under the Clean Water Act, the U.S. attorney said. The federal prosecutor's office filed the charges in 1990 on behalf of the Environmental Protection Agency, alleging that the company discharged excessive pollutants into the Monongahela River from an Allenport steel mill.
