Sunbeam and Kazarian Slug It Out: Paul Kazarian, the ousted chairman of Sunbeam-Oster, filed a $3.2-billion lawsuit against his investment partners, charging that they cheated and slandered him in a conspiracy driven by "unrestrained greed and malice." The lawsuit is the latest salvo in an unusually ugly and public fight between Kazarian, whose weekend ouster last January surprised Wall Street, and Sunbeam-Oster Co., a maker of small household appliances. He has about 20% control of the company.

Michael H. Steinhardt, a legendary money manager whose private investment funds have increased an average of almost 25% a year for three decades, announced Wednesday that he's liquidating his $2.6-billion family of funds to pursue other interests. Though less familiar to the public than billionaire investors Warren Buffett and George Soros, the rotund, mustachioed Steinhardt nonetheless is considered one of the best money managers Wall Street has ever produced.

And if he had followed his gut instinct to stay out of the stock market this past summer, his reputation might still be unblemished today. But Steinhardt, a professional money manager who heads the incredibly successful Steinhardt Partners, succumbed to the stock market's charms and thus became one of the biggest losers in the crash.

A New York venture-capital firm, Steinhardt Partners, has emerged as the high bidder for Burbank-based AME Inc., offering about $12 million for the video post-production company that is operating under the protection of bankruptcy court, according to published reports. John Hyde, AME's court-appointed trustee, said Monday that other bids topping the $12-million offer are still possible. An investor group paid $108.5 million to take AME private in 1989, mostly with leveraged or borrowed funds.

The former Compact Video, which was acquired by an investment group led by Steinhardt Partners of New York last August, has been reorganized and renamed Four Media Co., or 4MC. The reorganization included combining the Burbank video post-production firm into one unit with its former subsidiaries, Image Transform and Meridian Studios. Compact Video was one of the largest post-production firms, but a 1988 management-led leveraged buyout left it burdened with debt.

Compact Video Group Inc., a Burbank video post-production firm, has been sold to a New York investment management firm for an undisclosed price. ATS Acquisition Corp. said it purchased all the assets of Compact Video Group and its Compact Video Services Inc., Image Transform Inc. and Meridian Studios Inc., which will be combined into one operating unit. ATS is an investment vehicle of Steinhardt Partners, a New York investment group.

A group led by Michael H. Steinhardt, an aggressive New York money manager, said Thursday that it owns more than 5% of USAir Group and may try to acquire the nation's fifth-largest airline. USAir's shares rose $2.125 on news of the possible takeover attempt, closing at $49.75 on the New York Stock Exchange. A USAir spokesman would not comment on Steinhardt's action. Steinhardt, 48, runs one of the most respected private investment firms on Wall Street and manages a $1.3-billion portfolio.

Troubled Los Angeles-based brokerage firm Boston Group LP said Tuesday that it has reached two preliminary agreements for capital infusions that will enable it to return to financial health and resume normal operations. The firm failed to meet a $250,000 minimum net capital requirement last week, forcing it to halt normal business. The requirement is set by national regulatory agencies.
