Reporting from New York Stephen Petronio and Trisha Brown see each other's New York-based companies perform whenever they can. Friends and like-minded choreographers for more than 25 years, they both make sensual dances, packed with ideas. But when they come to the Los Angeles area soon, they'll be too busy preparing for their performances to take in each other's concerts. Says Petronio in a recent conversation, "I'll never stop being swept up in Trisha's work. " The 11-member Stephen Petronio Company is bringing the choreographer's hit "Underland," performed to songs by Australian rocker Nick Cave, to Riverside and Santa Barbara this week.

Choreographer Stephen Petronio doesn't know whether he has the virus that causes AIDS. It's not that he suspects he's positive, necessarily. He's robustly healthy. But Petronio, who leads a relaxation workshop for HIV-positive people today in Irvine, used to get tested every now and then but doesn't anymore. "I just live like I'm positive," said the shaven-headed bad boy of New York postmodern dance.

Among postmodern abstractionists, New York-based dancer-choreographer Stephen Petronio cultivated a distinctively liquid, sensual way of moving that made his formal explorations unexpectedly lush and stylish. However, after the events of Sept. 11, Petronio switched direction and, in his mid-40s, attempted to force himself into new expressive territory -- an agenda dominating his company's strongly danced but curiously flat three-part UCLA Live program in Royce Hall on Friday.

In his career as dancer and choreographer, Stephen Petronio has sought and won both respect and notoriety--respect as the first male in the company of postmodern pioneer Trisha Brown, notoriety for his erotic duets-in-corsets opposite obnoxious British ballet provocateur Michael Clark.

In Stephen Petronio's "Close Your Eyes and Think of England," a tender kiss passes down a line of four women. In his "AnAmnesia," the almost obsessively fast, swooping group movement suddenly stops to isolate a single action: the stroking of an arm. In "Surrender II," two guys in abbreviated sailor suits are all over one another in playful, gymnastic partnering gambits that evolve into another statement about the awareness of touch--of how it...

Imagine if Woody Allen had to make a movie that wasn't about male-female relationships. Or if Chuck Norris had to make a film in which he couldn't have a fight scene. Choreographer Stephen Petronio set such a stricture on himself two years ago. Instead of exploring the movement possibilities of isolated parts of the human body, his forte, he created a dance that examined the way a group of bodies interacting can carve up space.

With a zest for work that might daunt even Philip Glass, Michael Nyman has carved out quite a voluminous niche in the British contemporary music scene. Indeed, the similarities to Glass are striking. Like Glass, Nyman has a distinctive populist style rooted in Minimalism, and a personalized, amplified eponymous ensemble. Like Glass, he takes on everything--operas, ballets, chamber music, symphonic music, world music, film scores.
