Top-Rated Thrifts: A national rating firm has named three Orange County savings and loans as the top performing thrifts in California last year, according to a ranking based on a key index of profitability. The three, ranked in order, are Sterling Savings & Loan in Irvine, Fullerton Savings & Loan in Fullerton and Butterfield Savings & Loan in Santa Ana.

Sterling Savings & Loan has quietly closed its doors. A healthy, once fast-growing thrift buoyed by its real estate development subsidiaries, Sterling turned in its charter to the Office of Thrift Supervision, a little more than three months shy of what would have been its ninth anniversary. Sterling was not troubled. It was not seized by regulators, and its closing did not cost the government a dime. In fact, it was the state's top-rated S&L for several years running.

Two California men have been arrested near Denver on charges of embezzling $1.2 million from Sterling Savings & Loan here, according to law enforcement authorities and a federal complaint unsealed Thursday. Darrell Dean Knox, 46, of Fallbrook and Richard Russell Holtby, 44, of Murrieta are accused of embezzling the money from Sterling Builders Inc., a subsidiary of the Irvine-based thrift, according to a criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court here.

Two men have been arrested near Denver and charged with embezzling $1.2 million from a savings and loan in Irvine, according to interviews with law enforcement authorities and a federal complaint unsealed Thursday. Darrell Dean Knox, 46, of Fallbrook, and Richard Russell Holtby, 44, of Murrieta, are accused of embezzling the money from Sterling Builders Inc. (SBI), a subsidiary of Sterling Savings and Loan in Irvine, according to an Aug. 9 federal complaint by the FBI.

The former controller of a Sterling Savings & Loan subsidiary in Irvine pleaded guilty Wednesday in federal court here to charges of embezzling about $1.2 million from the institution. In the plea agreement, Darrell Dean Knox, 46, of Fallbrook admitted that he engaged in conspiracy and bank fraud by concocting a scheme to cash more than 200 checks from Sterling Builders Inc., the thrift's real estate division.
