Steve Cleveland had an inkling, but no real idea, about what went with being BYU's basketball coach. He was the low-key candidate among the high-profile names being bandied about in the spring of 1997. Cleveland, then the Fresno College coach, didn't rate so much as a whisper, which is why there were more than a few "Steve Who?" quips when he was hired to resurrect the 1-25 Cougars. He wasn't "Steve Who" for long after his arrival in Provo.

Cincinnati Coach Bob Huggins is staying put, turning down alma mater West Virginia on Monday. "I have tremendous feelings toward West Virginia and what they did for me, the opportunities they gave me. It's a heck of a place," Huggins said. "I feel the same way about here. I can't imagine it being better anywhere." Huggins told West Virginia officials of his decision Monday. * Neil Dougherty, an assistant coach at Kansas, was hired as Texas Christian's coach.

Heralded Brigham Young recruit Garner Meads will redshirt to take a Mormon mission and recover from a punctured lung suffered in practice. Jesse Pinegar, another freshman, and Bart Jepsen, a sophomore who returned from a mission last summer, also will redshirt because of injuries, Coach Steve Cleveland said Friday. Meads, a 6-foot-8 forward, has missed the past month of practice because of the lung injury. He also had knee surgery late last summer, limiting his time on the court.

Once again finding themselves on the outside looking in at the NCAA tournament despite 21 victories, UC Irvine (21-10) will settle for a berth in the National Invitation Tournament. Cal State Northridge set the tempo early for a slam dance Saturday night, but Brigham Young did not miss a step and kept a keen eye on the basket through the contact. Pursuing a second consecutive tournament championship with all the finesse of an artillery tank, Northridge misfired too often and lost, 84-78, to the Cougars before 7,157 at the Marriott Center. Northridge (6-3), which won the PowerBar Invitational at Hawaii last week, had a five-game winning streak snapped.

Not that the snow-covered backdrop of Brigham Young conjures up images of hula girls and warm surf, but the first half of Northridge's game against Southern Utah on Friday reminded the Matadors of Hawaii. Last week, Northridge trailed Hawaii by 13 points in the first round of the PowerBar Invitational before scoring 61 second-half points to run away with a victory.

The last time USC met Brigham Young, in the third-place game of the 2000 Yahoo Sports Invitational at Laie, Hawaii, Trojan Coach Henry Bibby was slapped with two technical fouls and ejected. He should have gotten himself kicked out of Saturday night's game as well. Because although the Trojans were able to rally from a 20-point second-half deficit to pull out a victory in Hawaii, they were punished severely in the Beehive State.
