CHARLOTTE, N.C. - In times like these, with the Lakers down to no healthy point guards, it's tempting to ask "What if?" What if Ramon Sessions hadn't opted out of the final year of his contract, a move setting in motion a chain of events that led to the Lakers acquiring Steve Nash and then Dwight Howard ? What if, indeed. Sessions is finishing a two-year, $10-million deal he signed with the Charlotte Bobcats after declining a one-year, $4.55-million player option that would have kept him with the Lakers for the 2012-13 season.

Lakers legend Jerry West turned 75 years old Tuesday. West, who is currently an executive with the Golden State Warriors, spent his entire playing career with the Lakers from 1960-1974. The Hall of Fame guard led the Lakers to the title in 1971-72; the team won a record 33-straight games along the way. West served as the Lakers' head coach from 1976-1979 but may have made his greatest impact on the Lakers as general manager from 1982 to 2000. In 1996, West signed Shaquille O'Neal and traded for the draft rights to Kobe Bryant -- setting up the initial championship three-peat starting in 2000.

The Lakers opened the season with one impressive win and one impressive loss. Expectations by and large are low for the franchise.  Oddsmaker MyTopSportsBooks.com gives the Lakers 40-1 odds to win the 2013-14 NBA championship. Pregame.com isn't quite as generous, giving the Lakers 75-1 odds and picking the team to win 35 games. Good news from MyTopSportsBooks.com for Coach Mike D'Antoni -- he's not a top-three favorite to be the first coach fired (that goes to his former assistant Steve Clifford of the Charlotte Bobcats with 4-5 odds)

The Lakers inched closer last week as their early off-season slowly continued. Kobe Bryant shed the walking boot after surgery to repair a torn Achilles' tendon, moving to a "medical mamba" shoe.  Bryant also started walking on the weight-bearing treadmill known as an Alter G.  Pau Gasol lost his crutches after nonsurgical procedures (knees).  He also saw his brother Marc Gasol, with the Memphis Grizzlies, get swept by the San Antonio Spurs. Bryant added to his tattoo collection . The Lakers guard's dispute with his mother over memorabilia will see a New Jersey courtroom June 17. General Manager Mitch Kupchak said he expects Dwight Howard to explore his opportunities instead of giving the Lakers an early commitment.

— Metta World Peace loved to hear that Reggie Evans was fined $5,000 for flopping. "Yes!" he said when informed by a reporter. He wasn't so happy to learn that Brooklyn forward Gerald Wallace wasn't fined by the NBA. Both players committed questionable flops when World Peace had the ball in the Lakers' 95-90 victory Tuesday over Brooklyn. "Did you see those two flops from Gerald Wallace? C'mon now. That's ridiculous," World Peace said Wednesday. "In one possession, he flopped twice and just fell.

The Lakers finished Week 2 with a single, last-second win on Thursday in Houston, dipping to 3-5 on the year. Starting the week in 10th place in the Western Conference , the Lakers ended Week 2 in 12th. The Lakers were bombarded on the road by the Dallas Mavericks on Tuesday, 123-104 . Jordan Hill was able to play, despite being diagnosed with a bone bruise . Part of the issue for the team was a significant shooting slump for the starting guard tandem of Steve Nash and Steve Blake. Nash continued to play through nerve issues that bothered him " almost every day . " Coach Mike D'Antoni was also struggling to find a proper substitution pattern, using a rare 11-man rotation . Another link to the Lakers' success was the shooting efficiency of Xavier Henry. The team performed relatively well when Henry contributed as a scorer.

Steve Nash gave Coach Mike D'Antoni a vote of confidence on Tuesday, despite acknowledging last season was "a disaster. " "I think he's a very bright coach.  He's not without flaws but none of us are," said Nash on the "Mason & Ireland Show" on ESPN L.A.
