Finally, Steve Fisher is just plain coach. Named as Michigan's interim coach two days before the National Collegiate Athletic Assn. basketball tournament, Fisher took the Wolverines to their first national championship, and was officially rewarded Monday when the "interim" was removed from his title. Fisher, an assistant for seven seasons, took over on March 15 after Bill Frieder accepted the job at Arizona State and was told he could not finish out the season with Michigan.

Steve Fisher, San Diego State's basketball coach, peered down from the high heaven of an NCAA news conference platform last Saturday and remarked, "This is a funny business we're in. " Fisher's words came after Xavier Thames had scored 53 points in 48 hours to lead the Aztecs out of an NCAA sub-regional in Spokane. It wasn't funny if you were trying to stop the senior known as "X," who was definitely a factor in giving a point-guard tutorial against New Mexico State and North Dakota State.

In the rush-to-tomorrow generation we now live in, Wednesday brought a ponder-and-cherish-yesterday respite. The presence of Steve Fisher as the appropriate keynoter of that was rich with coincidence and time-healing. When Fisher took his turn to speak at the annual Los Angeles Athletic Club preseason luncheon for Southern California's major college basketball coaches — from San Luis Obispo to San Diego — he was one of the old hands. This will be his 14th season as San Diego State's coach.

The "Fab Five" is back in the news and Steve Fisher is preparing a team for another possible Final Four run, but this isn't 1992 or '93 ? and this for sure isn't Michigan. The players still wear droopy shorts ? the most indelible contribution made by Chris Webber and Co., but Fisher's hair has turned a silvery gray. He is 65 now and Michigan is a far-away, fading asterisk ? home of the taken-down banners. Fisher was canned in 1997 for being the responsible CEO of a program rocked by scandal.

Michigan and Missouri have more in common these days than the design of their jerseys, which feature oversized block M's followed by the other seven letters in their names in smaller script. Both were guided through the opening weekend of the National Collegiate Athletic Assn. basketball tournament by assistant coaches. Missouri's Rich Daly, though, had at least several weeks to prepare for the tournament, taking over Feb.

Steve Fisher couldn't have picked a better place or time to make landfall: Leilani's on the Beach in Kaanapali, Maui, where he and his many friends hang out, just before one of those beautiful Hawaiian sunsets. Indeed it was the happiest of happy hours for Fisher, who was greeted by about 200 people, many of whom had given the 37-year-old Lahaina resident up for dead.

SAN DIEGO - Another sellout crowd is on its feet at Viejas Arena for the final minute of yet another San Diego State basketball win. On this night, a well-respected Nevada team that came in with a highly touted defense has been drubbed by 15 points. Xavier Thames, a senior who is San Diego State's leading scorer, has put himself within two points of reaching 1,000 points in his career as the Aztecs win for the 20th consecutive time, tying a school record. Could this team, currently ranked No. 6 with a 22-2 record, be as good as the 2010-11 squad that was 34-3 and made it to the regional rounds of the NCAA tournament?

Jeff Fisher knows life in the shadows. He lived it in college, when he was the faceless fourth in a USC secondary that featured Ronnie Lott, Dennis Smith and Joey Browner. Fisher lived it in the pros, when he played cornerback for five years with the Chicago Bears and picked up a Super Bowl ring, even though an ankle injury sidelined him for all of 1985, their season in the spotlight. So it's as if he has been groomed for decades to coach the Tennessee Titans, the team that fanfare forgot.

A towel draped across his shoulder, like Linus with his security blanket. A television set, tuned to Seattle's Channel 7. Basketball game on the TV. My old friend Steve Fisher suddenly started turning up everyplace but on a yacht in Barbados with Joan Collins and Robin Leach, indulging caviar wishes and champagne dreams. One morning I would flip open a magazine and there he'd be, curled up in Mickey Mouse's lap at Disneyland. Another day there he'd be, pumping President Bush's hand in the Rose Garden, swapping stories. Steve Fisher, America's coach.

On the surface, Steve Fisher and San Diego State's basketball program seem about as natural a pairing as, say, a snowstorm at the beach. Fisher, a Midwestern guy, coached Michigan to one national championship and reached two more title games. He coached the Fab Five. He was 184-82 in just more than eight seasons, reaching the postseason every year. San Diego State? The weather's great, but don't come here looking for hoops tradition.

Former Michigan coach Steve Fisher says he is still dealing with anger and bitterness after being fired last fall after the school's investigation into alleged NCAA violations. "I'm not the first guy to be fired, nor will I be the last. Probably no one who's ever been fired will admit that it was justified. So I'll stand on the pulpit and say mine wasn't justified," Fisher told the Detroit News.
