It hasn't been the best week for of Irvine High School's Steve Keith, who will coach the South team at 7:30 tonight in the 24th Orange County All-Star basketball game in UC Irvine's Bren Center. During a scrimmage Monday, Keith watched his players futilely attempt to execute a complicated passing offense that he has utilized to win 203 games in 12 seasons at Glendale and Irvine. "We challenged the players verbally, telling them it's got to get better or we're in for a long game come game night," Keith said.

Steve Keith announced his resignation as the Irvine High boys' basketball coach Thursday. "It's just time," Keith said. "I'd been the head coach at Irvine the last 12 years, and was the head coach at Glendale 10 years before that. I'm going to be 50 this year and I need a break from coaching. "I will continue to teach at Irvine and I still may be involved in the program in some capacity. But the high school athletic environment today can be all-consuming.

The ashes of an anonymous transient, who died trying to save a drowning woman in Sacramento, have been claimed by a man who said he is the brother of the would-be hero. The Sacramento Union reported that Steve Keith of Coeur d'Alene, Ida., identified the dead man as his brother, Anthony Curtis Keith, apparently resolving a mix-up over his name. Authorities had used a birth certificate found on the drowned man and the statement of an acquaintance to identify him as Daniel Joseph Read.

For the first time in 30 years of playing and coaching I find myself embarrassed to be associated with the game of basketball after viewing this year's McDonald's Prep All-Star Game. Watching this group of under-aged, over-indulged so-called basketball players do nothing but demonstrate their selfishness, laziness and out-of-control egos was more than a traditionalist like myself could stomach.
