Wilhans Ili, a defensive lineman from Bishop Amat, and Greg Ainsworth, a quarterback from Duarte, were named Southern Section football players of the year in their respective divisions. The two seniors were among 44 players from the San Gabriel Valley who were named to All-Southern Section teams in 11 divisions. Ili, a 5-11, 280-pound senior, was selected player of the year in Division I after helping to lead Bishop Amat to an unbeaten season.

Joe Nemechek won the pole for the NASCAR Busch Series race during SpeedWeeks at Daytona Beach, Fla., last month, but he missed the race because of flu. He also missed last week's race at Rockingham, N.C. This week at Las Vegas Motor Speedway he was back in his wife Andrea's No. 87 Chevrolet and he made the most of it by winning the Sam's Town 300 Saturday before an estimated 90,000 after an hour rain delay in mid-race.

The Bell tennis team chose an unfortunate time to lose its first match of the season. After winning all 13 of its regular season matches and three playoff contests, the Eagles succumbed, 18-11 1/2, to a stronger Van Nuys team Tuesday in the City Section 3-A Team Finals at Studio City Racquet Centre. Jeff Gordon knows nothing is certain in racing, so he wasn't enjoying the beating he was giving the rest of the field Sunday at Dover Downs International Speedway at Dover, Del. He was too busy counting the laps, hoping he wouldn't have to turn on to pit road for a splash of gas that would enable him merely to finish the MBNA Platinum 400 as something other than the winner.

Chan Ho Park received an extra bonus in San Antonio, where he is pitching for the Dodgers' double-A club. "Nolan Ryan was down there, and Chan Ho went to see him and thought it was the greatest thing that had happened to him," said Steve Kim, Park's uncle and agent who lives in Los Angeles. Kim visited Park recently and said his nephew is doing fine, but was a bit troubled that he doesn't know when he is going to join the Dodgers again.

For 25 years, people with mental disabilities who live at the Fairview Developmental Center in Costa Mesa have benefited from the volunteer efforts of Steve G. Pappas, 72. Pappas, who has coordinated annual fund-raising golf tournaments, recently was honored by the center with its volunteer of the year award. His wife, Ann Pappas, said her husband started hosting similar benefits in the 1960s in Northern California for children whose fathers were in prison.

A former rival of Hollywood madam Heidi Fleiss was arrested on allegations of running an international call girl ring that catered to celebrities and the rich, Los Angeles police said Thursday. For the last nine years, police say, Jody Diane "Babydol" Gibson--also known as Sasha--operated one of the largest illegal escort services in Los Angeles. A clientele of well over 100 men paid between $500 and $3,000 for the services of Gibson's prostitutes, police said.
