Steve Scoggin, athletic director and boys' basketball coach at University High School, has stepped down from both jobs for a year for personal reasons, he said Tuesday. Scoggin will remain at the school as a physical education teacher. Scoggin also said no replacement has been named for either position. Scoggin came to University as the boys' basketball coach in 1983. University was 8-15 overall last season, 3-7 in the Sea View League.

Junior Steve Scoggin knows that being named The Times Orange County player of the year carries a heavy weight. Next season, people will expect even greater things. But if his performance--and durability--this season are any indications, Scoggin, who guided Mater Dei to the state Division I championship game, is up to the task. He led the Monarchs in scoring (14.3) and free-throw percentage (74.7%).

Steve Scoggin, University High School boys' basketball coach, resigned Wednesday to avoid putting pressure on his son, Brian, who will attend University and play basketball next season. Athletic Director Mark Cunningham announced Scoggin's resignation Thursday night. Scoggin coached University from the 1984-85 season to the 1987-88, took a year off for personal reasons, and coached this years' team to a 6-17 overall record, 0-10 in the Sea View League.

Lee Jackson has been named the boys' basketball coach at University High School, interim athletic director Monica Colunga said. Jackson was an assistant basketball coach at University from 1985-87. He replaces Steve Scoggin, who will take a 1-year sabbatical. Scoggin has been the Trojans' coach for the past 4 seasons.

Mater Dei guard Steve Scoggin has made a commitment to attend Nevada Las Vegas, Mater Dei officials said Saturday. Scoggin, a four-year varsity player and three-year starter, was The Times' Orange County player of the year last season after averaging 14.3 points and shooting 42% from three-point range. Scoggin has helped the Monarchs to a Southern Regional championship, three Southern Section titles and four league titles.

Steve Ruiz has been named baseball coach at University High School, Athletic Director Steve Scoggin announced Tuesday. Ruiz has been the Trojans' junior varsity coach the past two seasons. He replaces Chris Conlin, who was fired as coach Sept. 12 by Principal Bob Bruce. Conlin remains a physical education teacher, head wrestling coach and assistant football coach at the school.

Fresno Edison 69, Mater Dei 67 (OT)--Willie Johnson scored 39 points for Edison (8-4), which shot 51% from the field. Steve Scoggin had 21 points and eight rebounds for Mater Dei (8-2). In the Reebok Holiday Classic: No. 6 Capistrano Valley 62, No. 4 Santa Margarita 56--Nate Hair scored 23 points for the Cougars (8-1), who advanced to the final to play host Trabuco Hills. Spencer Gloger scored 27 points for Santa Margarita (7-1).

Mike Dinneen has been named basketball coach at University High School in Irvine, the school announced Tuesday. Dinneen, 31, spent 10 seasons at St. Paul in Santa Fe Springs and was named Angelus League coach of the year in 1986. He replaces Steve Scoggin, who resigned in March after coaching six seasons at University. The Trojans were 5-18 overall, 0-10 in Sea View League play last season.

Steve Scoggin/Basketball, Mater Dei/Junior After struggling with his shot through most of the playoffs, the 6-foot guard broke out in the Southern California regionals. He had 10 three-pointers in three games, averaged 16.3 points and led Monarch scorers in all three games. He scored 14 of his 16 points in the second half to help Mater Dei come from behind against Manual Arts and had 18 points in the regional final against Artesia.
