Steve Shaw, who co-starred in the nighttime soap opera "Knots Landing" for eight years, has died from injuries suffered in an automobile accident. He was 25. A resident of Burbank, Shaw was killed Wednesday on Silver Lake Boulevard at Cove Avenue when his Porsche 911 slammed into a city dump truck. Police said the car crossed over the double yellow line on a curve and struck the truck head-on.

Somehow, you get the feeling this would never happen to Notre Dame's football team. When the members of UC Irvine women's soccer team showed up for the first day of practice this season, they didn't know who their coach would be. And when they found out, it turned out to be a guy they sat next to in biology, or somebody they had danced with at a fraternity party. Confused? Well, not surprisingly, this is kind of a long story.

Keith Comfort, a former UC Davis women's soccer coach, has been hired to coach the UC Irvine women's soccer team, the university announced Tuesday. Comfort, who coached at Davis from 1985-88, was named the Northern California Athletic Conference coach of the year in 1988 when the Aggies were ranked 13th in NCAA Division II. He replaces interim coach Steve Shaw, a UC Irvine student who has graduated.

Simmering racial tensions between Asian and Latino prisoners at a minimum-security California Youth Authority facility in the Antelope Valley boiled over into a full-scale battle Thursday night when more than 26 inmates fought for nearly 20 minutes before they were subdued by authorities. Supt. Steve Shaw said most of the Asian and Latino inmates at Camp Fenner, a minimum-security work camp in Llano, were involved in the fight, which was waged with mops, brooms and sticks.

Atraffic light went into operation outside Harvard-Westlake School on Coldwater Canyon Avenue in Studio City this week, paid for by parents to relieve congestion and safety problems. The private school's parent association raised $80,000 over the last year to pay for the light. That saved them the yearlong wait it takes for installation if the city must pay for it, said Julie Jaskol, a spokeswoman for Los Angeles City Councilman Michael Woo, who represents the area.

Ken Gunn scored at the 32-mintue mark in the second half Sunday as UC Irvine won its first Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. soccer match, upsetting UC Santa Barbara, 1-0, at Irvine. Gunn scored on a fast break, dribbling by two defenders and then kicking the ball from 20 yards out past the diving John Guthrie, the Gauchos' goalie. UCI is 1-3, 3-7-2. UCSB is 3-1, 6-8. "The first half was one of our best of the season, " said Derek Lawther, UCI coach. "We took over and were aggressive from the start.

The Harvard Water Polo Foundation senior team opens defense of its national indoor club championship Friday in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., meeting teams from Rice University and Miami on the first day of the three-day, 12-team tournament. The Harvard team plays Rice at 9:30 a.m. (PDT) and Miami at 1 p.m. at the International Swimming Hall of Fame pool. Harvard is coached by foundation director Rich Corso, the Harvard High coach, and is composed of adults. The average age of team members is 24.

Royal High extended its two-year winning streak to 39 matches with a 15-10, 15-4, 15-5 sweep of Highland on Friday in the opening round of the Division II volleyball playoffs at Royal.
