Re "A new direction for West Hollywood," March 21 Although I appreciate The Times' coverage of West Hollywood, this story failed to include Eastside residents who are enthusiastic about these changes. Many of us have long sought economic development on this side of town. I wish your story had depicted Casden Properties' plans for the Movietown shopping center more thoroughly. Yes, it includes 294 condominiums, but the plans also call for new retail space and affordable housing. Casden has diligently listened to what we in the community have had to say about its project and conscientiously revised its plans to reflect our concerns.

Olympic medalist Amanda Beard of Irvine won the 200-meter breaststroke in 2 minutes 30.73 seconds Thursday night at the U.S. National Swimming Championships. It was the first major meet since the Olympic Games in Atlanta last summer, and came only one month after Beard, 15, had a cyst removed from her right wrist. "I wasn't able to train for about a month after the surgery, so this was a good test," said Beard, a sophomore at Irvine High.

Chatsworth High has three City Section 4-A volleyball championship banners hanging on the gymnasium wall. And needless to say, another would be mighty nice for the mighty Chancellors. They are well on their way after after easily defeating Cleveland, 15-9, 15-8, 16-14, Thursday in a quarterfinal match at Chatsworth. There was a brief letdown in the third game, however.

The Palmdale City Council on Monday granted City Administrator Bob Toone a 3% raise that boosts his annual salary to $95,889. The increase was less than the 5% Toone had sought, but nevertheless keeps his salary above those of the city managers of several larger cities, including nearby Lancaster. Council members voted 5 to 0 to approve Toone's pay increase as part of a two-year contract that takes effect Jan. 1. His current salary is $93,064.

The Chancellors defeated Taft in five games earlier this season in the teams' only meeting.

The Lancaster City Council, which last week gave its top candidate for the city manager's job until Wednesday to say whether he would accept, extended the deadline to today after a last-minute talk with their choice, reportedly a former Simi Valley official. Lancaster Mayor William Pursley refused to name the candidate, but city government sources identified him as Reno City Manager Harold Schilling, a former assistant city manager in Simi Valley.

Before Tuesday's City Section 4-A Division semifinal, Chatsworth High boys' volleyball Coach Steve West thought the key to beating top-seeded University was to shut down David Ottenfeld. The Chancellors held Ottenfeld to six kills but found the Warriors' other players too potent in a 15-13, 15-6, 15-3 loss at University. James Kohn had 11 kills and four blocks and Philip Tongsak added 11 kills to boost the balanced Warriors into the final. "They are a great offensive team," West said.

It is not uncommon for team members to let their hair grow until they win a championship. But at Chatsworth High, the boys' volleyball team is starting a new tradition: haircuts. Weird haircuts--with numbers, arrows and squiggly lines shaved into some of the players' hair. Others have close trims. "For inspiration," said middle blocker Gene Urcan, who sports a vertical arrow with the tip pointed down on the back of his head. "We're getting into the spirit."
