LAS VEGAS - A disgraced Nevada politician who just hours earlier had been expelled from the State Assembly in an unprecedented vote was arrested outside Barstow after a high-speed chase with police. Steven Brooks was being held Friday on charges that included resisting arrest and throwing objects. His arrest came after state lawmakers in Carson City, Nev., voted to remove him from office, calling him "potentially dangerous. " Officials say Brooks, 41, was arrested about 7 p.m. Thursday on Interstate 15 at Stoddard Wells Road.

Sheriff's homicide detectives are investigating the shooting death of a 65-year-old woman in Temple City. The woman's body was found Sunday morning inside her house on the 10300 block of Key West Street by her daughter, who did not live there, said Sgt. Rich Peña of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Peña said the death was a homicide, not a suicide, but could not give further details. Investigators have not identified a suspect. The victim's name has not been released.

Drunk driving is suspected in an accident that killed five members of a Southern California family. A man, his teenage daughter, and her aunt and two uncles -- were killed early Saturday in southeastern Nevada when a drunk-driving suspect crashed into the back of their Chevy Astro van on Interstate 15, authorities said. Jean Soriano, 18, was driving a Dodge Durango on I-15 about 30 miles south of Mesquite around 3 a.m. when he struck the back of the Astro, according to Loy Hixson of the Nevada Highway Patrol.

A Democratic Nevada lawmaker has been arrested on suspicion of threatening to hurt another state representative, North Las Vegas police said. Steven Brooks, 40, who represents the northern edge of Las Vegas in the state Legislature, was charged with intimidating a public officer with physical force. According to the city jail's website , Brooks was charged with a state statute that indicates the threat was "immediate," making the charge a felony. Bail was set at $100,000.

A man who allegedly crashed a Bentley belonging to Lakers player Jordan Hill early Saturday morning was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving at Hill's condominium complex, authorities said. Michael Lacey, 26, allegedly ran the car into the condo complex at 13900 Marquesas Way in Marina del Rey shortly before 2 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol. Police found the wrecked vehicle unattended and located Lacey inside Hill's condominium. The Laker was home at the time.

The electronic ankle monitors California used for several years to monitor more than 4,000 high-risk sex offenders and gang members were so inaccurate and unreliable that corrections officials said that the public was “in imminent danger.” A little more than a year ago, California quietly began conducting tests on the GPS devices that track the movements of thousands of sex offenders. Officials found that batteries died early, cases cracked and reported locations were off by as much as three miles.
