A suicide victim suspected of one woman's murder and under investigation in the apparent disappearances of several other women was a "mentally disordered sex offender" who had been committed to a mental institution before serving two terms in prison, court records show.

Orange County sheriff's officials said they are looking for several women whose credit cards were found in the home of a Lakewood man who killed himself last month after investigators arrived at his door to ask him about the slaying of a woman who had been in the process of renting a room from him. Lt. Richard Olson said investigators want to ask the women how Steven Christopher Walters may have acquired their cards. So far, officials have been unable to track down any of the women, he said.

Bertha Velasquez said she has been slowly coming to terms with her daughter's murder of more than 10 months ago. The popular 16-year-old was found strangled and buried under a pile of pine needles near a flood control channel not far from here. It's the fact that her daughter's murderer has never been caught that still keeps Velasquez awake at night. "There's hardly a moment that I don't think about it," she said with a burst of tears.

Orange County sheriff's officers said Wednesday that they are looking for several women whose credit cards were found in the home of a Lakewood man who killed himself last month after investigators arrived at his door to ask him about the slaying of his female tenant. Sheriff's Lt. Richard J. Olson said investigators want to ask the women how Steven Christopher Walters may have acquired their cards and some other personal possessions found in his home and garage.
