The trade deadline is nearing, so it's only natural that there's speculation the Rams could deal running back Steven Jackson. Those rumors have swirled for some time. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Sunday that the Rams have "fielded trade inquiries" for Jackson recently, and cited the Cardinals, Steelers, Packers and Cowboys as teams that could be looking for help at the position. There's a good chance Jackson will be gone after this season anyway, as both parties have agreed to let him opt out of his contract after 2012.

The Atlanta Falcons agreed to a three-year, $12-million deal with Steven Jackson, considered by most to be the best free-agent running back available. “I think this is a very big signing for us,” Falcons General Manager Thomas Dimitroff told the Associated Press on Thursday evening. “It continues to bolster our offensive firepower. It gives us not only strength, power in running ability but also the versatility to catch out of the backfield, which is a very important part of this offense.” Jackson, 29, had 1,042 yards rushing with the St. Louis Rams last season, his eighth straight season with more than 1,000 yards.

The Supreme Court unanimously restored the conviction of a California rapist Monday and rebuked the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals for handing down an opinion it called "inexplicable" and "dismissive" in tone. The decision marked the 10th time since November that the justices had reversed rulings of the 9th Circuit Court; nearly all of the decisions were unanimous. The justices have repeatedly faulted the San Francisco-based appeals court for intervening in state criminal cases and second-guessing rulings of the California state courts.

Joe Vitt took over as the St. Louis Rams' interim coach with a no-nonsense reputation and just-the-facts demeanor. That doesn't put him above using some inspirational tools now and then. Before the Rams' 24-21 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday, Vitt showed a clip of the film "Gladiator" to the players, to keep them fired up and fighting -- despite the absence of Coach Mike Martz and most of their stars.

Oregon State running back Steven Jackson cut a mysterious figure when he trotted onto the field against USC last season. The Trojans dissected film and prepared all week for small, quick Ken Simonton and his backup, Patrick McCall. But in the second quarter, along came Jackson, a burly freshman from Las Vegas who rumbled for 119 rushing yards and also caught a touchdown pass in the Beavers' 16-13 overtime loss.

After missing the previous four games because of a groin tear, St. Louis Rams running back Steven Jackson returned Sunday and led the Rams to touchdowns on each of their first two possessions against the Cleveland Browns.
