State Sen. Charles M. Calderon was making some final holiday arrangements last Christmas Eve when he paused to prepare a special package. Calderon took five bundles of cash, a total of $10,000, and drove to the Montebello police station. There, officers photocopied the money for later identification. Then they placed it in a manila envelope.

Steve Newton, basketball coach at South Carolina, resigned Monday as the school released a report outlining five NCAA recruiting violations. Newton, in his second season, will become an assistant athletic director, effective May 31, for the remaining two years of his $102,000-a-year contract. Assistants James Holland and Craig Morris also resigned. "It simply is not possible for this staff to continue here in the best interests of all involved," Newton said.

A Los Angeles Municipal Court judge has ruled that two men should be arraigned on charges that they attempted to extort $100,000 from state Sen. Charles M. Calderon (D-Whittier) by threatening last winter to expose alleged political improprieties while Calderon was running for county supervisor. Steven Newton, who is married to Calderon's ex-wife, Jeanine, and Newton's half-brother, Robert Moreno, are scheduled to be arraigned on three felony charges Oct.

Two men have been charged with attempting to extort $100,000 from state Sen. Charles M. Calderon by threatening last winter to expose alleged political improprieties while Calderon was running for county supervisor. Expected to surrender in East Los Angeles Municipal Court today on three felony charges is Steven Newton--who is married to Calderon's ex-wife, Jeannine. Also charged is Robert Mareno, Newton's half-brother.

San Diego County supervisors Wednesday ordered a six-month review of ultralight plane activity to determine whether further rules are needed to cover landing and take-off sites. The board established a dusk to 8 a.m. curfew for the ultralights and barred the planes from taking off or landing within 1,000 feet of homes or areas of public assembly.
