Already tainted by the March sentencing of seven former deputies in a drug-money skimming scandal, more troubles surfaced for the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department on Thursday with the arrests of seven people, including two deputies, on suspicion of stealing credit cards from motorists and using them to buy merchandise.

A former sheriff's deputy was sentenced Monday to four years in prison for his role in a scam in which he stopped motorists, mostly elderly men, and stole their credit cards, racking up thousands of dollars in charges for electronics and sports equipment. Judge Lance Ito sentenced former Deputy Steven Switzer, 31, who pleaded guilty in December to 10 counts of theft.

Another deputy from the Temple City Sheriff's Station has been charged with criminal wrongdoing. Deputy Glen Cozart, 31, a field training officer, was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of planting false evidence on arrestees, filing a false report and lying in court while under oath, all felonies.
