Water polo is one of those collegiate sports in which fun and friendship rank right up there with the fierce competition. There are no dreams of wealth and fame. Only about 10 players on a team of 28 even have scholarships. Stever O'Rourke and Darin Smith, two of USC's non-scholarship players, have quite a friendship because of water polo, and each has had times when he really needed a friend. O'Rourke is a senior driver. He says his unusual nickname evolved from his given name, Steven Robert.

In nonleague water polo: Marina 14, Capistrano Valley 8--Stever O'Rourke scored six goals and goalkeeper Darin Smith had eight saves for Marina (21-6) in the nonleague contest.

Orange County's best high school senior water polo players and some of the best in the world will be featured in a water polo doubleheader Sunday at El Toro High. The 10th annual county all-star game is scheduled for 1 p.m. It will be followed at about 2 by an exhibition between the U.S. and Australian national teams.

Robert Grayeli and Sean Hylton scored four goals apiece to lead Costa Mesa High to a 12-11 victory over Marina on Wednesday to win the Southern Section Division II water polo championship at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach. "The emotion of losing [to Marina in the quarterfinals] last season carried us in the first half of the game," Grayeli said. Costa Mesa zoomed to a 7-1 lead late in the first quarter and never relinquished it en route to its fourth Southern Section championship.

An unlikely hero emerged from Marina's 14-13 overtime victory over Servite in the Southern Section Division II water polo semifinals Saturday at Mt. San Antonio College. Senior Jason Box scored the game-winning goal from eight meters with 1 minute 32 seconds remaining to help third-seeded Marina (22-6) advance to the finals, where it will play top-seeded Costa Mesa.

Marina put in its bid for the Division II water polo title with an 11-5 upset over third-seeded Costa Mesa in the quarterfinals Wednesday at Golden West College. The Vikings (18-11) advance to the semifinals, where they will play Servite. The Friars dumped Marina, 18-6, this season. Marina Coach John Wright said if his team can repeat its effort against the Mustangs, he likes the Vikings' chances on Saturday against the second-seeded Friars.

In other Division II water polo: Costa Mesa 31, Pacifica 3--Ryan Dandy had six goals and teammate Robert Grayeli added five to lead Costa Mesa (23-5) in the blowout. Costa Mesa will play Marina in a quarterfinals Wednesday. Los Alamitos 12, El Dorado 7--Eric Ploessel scored five goals, Tim Campbell scored three goals and Charles Brodsky recorded 12 saves to lead visiting Los Alamitos (19-9). Los Alamitos will face Servite in the second round.
