With gas prices continuing a steady upward climb, you may be headed to the dealer in search of something less thirsty at the pump. But which cars' sticker price gives you the most bang for your buck? We asked Edmunds.com to look at the vehicles with the lowest sticker price per fuel-economy rating. The math was simple: divide the car's base price by its EPA rating for combined fuel economy. The result gives a look at how much each mile per gallon will cost you. Photos: Top 10 cars with lowest cost per mpg Topping the list is Ford's C-Max Energi.

The average price for a gallon of regular gasoline hit $3.648 over the last week in Los Angeles and Long Beach, up 3.6 cents from a week earlier. In Orange County, the average had climbed the same amount, to $3.642 a gallon. But experts say it could be a lot worse. Recent increases are driven in part by annual refinery maintenance and California's early switch to a more expensive summer blend of gasoline. PHOTOS: The 10 cars with lowest sticker price per mpg That's part of the reason gas prices have jumped, sometimes sharply, each spring for more than a decade, said Jeff Spring, a spokesman for the Automobile Club of Southern California.

In an effort to juice up tepid sales of its 2014 Chevrolet Volt, General Motors Co. will slash the sticker price by $5,000, to $34,995, including shipping. The price cut makes the plug-in hybrid Volt more competitive with other rechargeable cars, including rival plug-in hybrids such as the Toyota Prius and all-electric vehicles such as the Nissan Leaf. Most of the big car companies have reduced the prices of their rechargeable vehicles this year because consumers have been slow to adopt the technology.

Robin is buying a new car. Like all car buyers, she's done her best to haggle the price down. Now, she says, she's being told that she has to pay sales tax on the full sticker price of the vehicle, rather than the discounted price. Robin asks: Is that kosher? ASK LAZ: Smart answers to consumer questions When you buy a cellphone in California, you're taxed on the full retail value of the device instead of the much lower subsidized price you actually pay. As for cars, I had to check on this one with the State Board of Equalization.

The woebegone auto industry assumed a festive air this week as it began the annual new car parade with old-fashioned hoopla and price hikes. But analysts say consumers should not be put off: Beyond the hype there are some noteworthy products, and few expect the higher sticker prices to stick because of a sluggish economy and a glut of cars. With three quarters of red ink behind them and at least one more quarterly loss on the horizon, U.S.

A customer at Kramer Mazda in Santa Monica offered the $25,000 in the briefcase he was carrying to buy a new Mazda MX-5 Miata sports car. It was too much--$11,200 more than the price of a stripped-down version of the two-seater convertible and about $7,000 more than a fully loaded version. "I told him we have set a price, we had a list of names and we'd be happy to put him on the list for when the cars come in," said John Lyon, sales manager at Kramer Mazda.

Women are more likely than men to be taken for a ride, so to speak, when calling around for car repairs. A new study out of Northwestern University found auto shops quoted higher prices to women who appeared uninformed about work needed to be done. But women were also more successful in negotiating the price down. Researchers Meghan Busse and Florian Zettelmeyer at Northwestern's Kellogg School of Management ran field experiments to gauge the differences in treatment between men and women.

Mazda's signature success story turns a new chapter this month with the arrival of the 2000 Miata Special Edition. This version of the roadster mates the traditional 1.8-liter, 140-horsepower inline-4 engine to a close-ratio, six-speed manual transmission. Only 3,000 of these U.S.-only vehicles will hit showrooms. That works out, on average, to about four per dealership nationwide--with a sticker price of $25,055.

Are hybrids worth their price tag?  Autos reporter Jerry Hirsch takes a look at that question in this video and in his Los Angeles Times Business section story Sunday. In general, he says, it takes about five years to recoup the price differential between a hybrid and a similar gas-powered vehicle. Hirsch compares two wagons in this video, the Prius v hybrid and the Volkswagen Jetta diesel, to give an idea about the cost, comfort and driveability issues to think about before you head out to a dealer.

Cars don't fit under the typical Christmas tree, but a holiday buying surge could make December the biggest month in a big year for the auto industry. Heavy advertising and discounts could launch U.S. auto sales this month above the 1.5 million sold in August, the top month so far this year, said Jessica Caldwell, an analyst with car shopping website Edmunds.com. The December car sales frenzy is a new phenomenon. "Prior to the recession, December was very average," Caldwell said.

Ford Motor Co. will knock $4,000 off the price of its 2014 Focus electric cars, slated to hit dealers' lots in a few weeks. With destination charge included, the base model will now cost $35,995. In a statement Thursday, a company spokeswoman said the lowered price of the “fully-contented” cars “keeps us competitive in the marketplace and is an important part of our commitment to provide customers with a range of electrified vehicles to choose from.” The electric Focus has lagged far behind other battery-powered competitors, selling just 177 of the 2013 model cars in June.

Diesel vehicles beat out gasoline-powered cars in low ownership costs, saving drivers between $2,000 and $6,000 on average over the course of a few years. A new study  by the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute that was commissioned by Robert Bosch LLC, a developer of both gasoline and diesel systems among other automotive technologies, found a wide range in savings. Drivers could pocket as little as $67 in a three-year period to more than $15,000 over five years, though the bulk of the study's findings fell into that middle ground of $2,000 to $6,000.

Although the Big Three auto makers say they are barely raising sticker prices for the 1994 model year that begins Oct. 1, consumers may do a double take when comparing costs. General Motors, Chrysler and Ford say their car and truck prices are going up an average of less than 2% on "comparably equipped" models. But auto analysts say the reality is that prices for Detroit's vehicles will rise an average of about 5% from a year ago. The difference?
