Harris Done still can't believe it. The movie house he loyally patronized as a kid, the theater with Orange County's biggest, baddest screen, is showing his first major film tonight. "I am so stunned," said Done, the Anaheim-bred director of "Storm," an action-thriller screening at the Edwards Newport Cinemas in Newport Beach, a.k.a. the Big Newport.

In "The Perfect Storm," Sebastian Junger's book about the fiercest storm in modern history, he described Linda Greenlaw as "one of the best sea captains, period, on the East Coast." One of the few women involved in commercial fishing, Greenlaw, who was stationed out of Gloucester, Mass., captained a sword-fishing boat working the waters east of the Grand Banks off Newfoundland, Canada. In the film version of "The Perfect Storm," Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio ("The Color of Money") plays Greenlaw.

Operation Desert Storm is raging all over again in the middle of the Nevada desert. But this time it's going to cost a whole lot less. "Desert Storm--The Movie" will probably come in for less than $1 million. The first of the Persian Gulf War movies to go before the cameras is truly an exercise in economy. There are no stars: Former Ford model Lois Hamilton, who has top billing, is perhaps best known for a cameo role in "Summer Rental" and TV roles.

Three men were convicted Friday of stealing $13 million worth of missile launchers, jeeps and other goods in the largest known theft of equipment from a U.S. military base. Convicted of conspiracy and conversion of government property were Dennis Lambert, 53, the base's former range maintenance officer; Loyd Pilgrim, 37, a military surplus dealer; and Grant Kruger, 43, president of the Military Vehicles and Arms Museum in Minnesota.

Newspaper headlines struck a hauntingly familiar chord last week, as Iraq's refusalto follow United Nations peace resolutions awakened the specter of renewed military action in the Persian Gulf. The nation held its breath--along with executives at ABC. The network had scheduled its docudrama "The Heroes of Desert Storm" to air this Sunday--six months to the day after the government of Iraq accepted terms for a permanent cease-fire.

The effects-laden "Hollow Man," starring Kevin Bacon, stealthily maneuvered its way to the top of the box office charts in its opening weekend on 2,956 screens with an estimated take of $26.8 million, far and away surpassing the two other solid weekend debuts, "Space Cowboys" and "Coyote Ugly." If the estimate proves to be on target, it will beat "The Sixth Sense" ($26.7 million) as August's best starter ever.
