A bout of bad weather is heading toward the East Coast, forecasters said Sunday, two days after violent tornadoes and heavy rainfall pummeled the Midwest.   The National Weather Service predicted a chance of severe weather from northern Virginia to Maine. “Damaging winds and heavy downpours are expected to be the main threats, but small hail and isolated tornadoes cannot be ruled out,” the weather service said on its website. Parts of Maine that have already seen 2 inches of rain are expected to receive 2 to 3 inches more, triggering a series of flash flood warnings, the weather service said.

Tiger Woods versus Sergio Garcia: There is nothing better than a knock-down, drag-out fight in golf. And this is a war of words and etiquette rather than fisticuffs on the hockey rink, a benches-clearing brawl in baseball or a shot-for-shot showdown on the golf course. The two are in a three-way tie for the lead at the Players Championship in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., where stormy weather has been the backdrop to a contentious weekend of play. It all started at the par-five second hole during the rain-interrupted third round on Saturday when Garcia was in mid-swing as spectators across the fairway reacted with cheers and howls when Woods prepared to play a shot.

The Carnival season in New Orleans got off to a rough start when thunderstorms and chilly temperatures canceled or postponed most of the parades. About 50 other parades are scheduled to roll over the next 12 days, culminating with Mardi Gras on Feb. 5.

The space shuttle Endeavour's record-long stargazing flight was extended to at least 16 1/2 days because of stormy weather at the landing site Friday. NASA told the seven-member crew to try to bring the spaceship home today along with its cache of astronomy data. The delay, after more than two weeks of round-the-clock work with a $200-million set of ultraviolet telescopes, left the crew a full day to rest and look out the window.

The stormy weather that brought showers and cloudy skies this week is expected to exit as the latest low-pressure system travels east, clearing the way for sunny skies and a return to seasonal San Diego County weather. According to the National Weather Service, the second of two low-pressure systems was moving into Arizona Thursday, just in time for clear weekend weather. Rainfall from this week's storms totalled 0.

Fred Astaire called it the greatest dance number he had ever seen on film. Any movie musical buff will recognize it immediately. Nearly half a century after it was shot, audiences still shake their heads and clap their hands. It's the dance routine performed by the Nicholas Brothers in 20th Century Fox's "Stormy Weather," an all-black musical featuring Bill (Bojangles) Robinson, Lena Horne and a supporting cast that reads like a Who's Who of black stars.

"Stormy Weather," Lena Horne's signature song, is now the title of a new musical biography recapping her bluesy struggle to stardom and the subsequent heartaches that released her anger and ripened her artistry. It may not have been raining all the time, but the downpours were fairly routine for the woman dubbed "the Bronze Venus," a moniker from an early film role that hints at the racial hurdles she faced in her trailblazing career. The show, which had its West Coast premiere Friday at Pasadena Playhouse, stars Leslie Uggams as a jazzy older Lena and Nikki Crawford as the shy and vulnerable singer in her younger years.

'Tis the season for ... weather-related flight cancellations. Weeks before this first official day of winter, passengers felt its icy hand when storms stranded thousands at East Coast airports. Heavy air travel compounds such delays. "Holiday seasons are always tough," says David Stempler, president of the Air Travelers Assn., a passenger advocacy group. "If something happens, there's no room on another airline to accommodate you."

Oil from the Deepwater Horizon spill was reported for the first time on the beaches of Texas as high seas and stormy weather on Monday plagued new cleanup plans in the Gulf of Mexico, including the test deployment of a 1,100-foot "super skimmer" ship. The weather prevented skimming operations for the eighth consecutive day off the coasts of Mississippi, Alabama and Florida. Along the Louisiana coast, a storm system made landfall Monday afternoon, bringing thunderstorms and grounding skimming boats operating close to shore.

Standing in front of her mudslide-damaged home in La Cañada Flintridge on a wet Saturday afternoon, Karineh Mangassarian said she hoped the rain would give it a rest. "At least for a month, then it can rain again," she said. "I just want the storms to ease up." Better luck next year. As residents worried once again about sliding foothills and Los Angeles was again bedeviled by the kind of bumper-car accidents that happen whenever it rains, there's good news for water managers and people who generally like stormy weather.

According to James Gavin's new biography, "Stormy Weather: The Life of Lena Horne," the legendary singer-actress was never comfortable being an icon. "As I say in the introduction of my book, icons are not allowed to be human beings," explains Gavin, a lifelong fan who interviewed Horne in 1994. "Once you step up on that pedestal . . . and everyone is scrutinizing your every move -- how do you function as a human being? You have to cover up mistakes you made."

Leslie Uggams and Lena Horne have crossed paths only a few times. But Uggams feels that the force and power of the iconic singer have always been a part of her. "Lena was a goddess in my house -- my mother played her records all the time, and I was always moved by how beautiful and classy she was," says Uggams. "When I was doing my nightclub act at the Coconut Grove in 1965, she pinned me as a Delta -- we both belong to Delta Sigma Theta. I've always felt like she's been so close to me."

Some people may have dreamed of a very white Christmas and others feared an extremely wet one. But most people in Southern California were relieved that a set of back-to-back storms through Thursday night brought less snow and rain than originally predicted. Strong and potentially dangerous wind caused cancellation of skiing on some newly powdered slopes in Wrightwood and Big Bear, and winter storm warnings were to remain in effect through midday today in the mountains.

Stars aplenty shone from the Wiltern stage Wednesday at the second "Stormy Weather" concert, a fund-raiser for Don Henley's Walden Woods Project. Yet despite many stellar performances among short sets by Joni Mitchell, Stevie Nicks, Reba McEntire, Trisha Yearwood, Sheryl Crow, Norah Jones, Paula Cole, Deborah Cox, Susan Tedeschi and Michelle Branch, the star of the evening wasn't a single one of them. The true headliner was the singer-songwriter tradition itself.

Stormy weather, natural gas leaks and the threat of explosions kept hundreds of anxious residents from assessing the damage to their homes a day after a large tornado tore through a 35-mile stretch of northern Colorado, killing one person and injuring dozens. The twister damaged or destroyed homes, businesses, dairies and farms in several towns Thursday. A 52-year-old man was killed at a campground near Greeley, the Weld County coroner's office said.
