Cisco Systems Inc. will buy StrataCom Inc. for $4 billion in the largest takeover ever in the computer network equipment business, the companies said Monday. Cisco said the purchase will allow it to provide all the networking switches for voice, data and video communications across public computer networks such as the Internet and private ones. The acquisition would give Cisco a lead over its nearest competitors in a market niche that's been growing at the rate of 90% a year, analysts said.

International Business Machines Corp. is joining with Santa Clara-based 3Com Corp. and Cascade Communications Corp. in an initiative to unclog Internet bottlenecks, taking on a key product from Cisco Systems Inc., analysts said. Networking companies 3Com and Westford, Mass.-based Cascade along with IBM will unveil a networking approach known as IP switching today in New York.

Alcatel, Europe's second-largest phone equipment maker, said Wednesday that it agreed to buy Canada's Newbridge Networks Corp. for $6.5 billion in stock in a deal that could help it catch up with Lucent Technologies Inc. and Cisco Systems Inc. Newbridge would give Alcatel equipment that delivers voice, data and video on a single network. Phone companies such as Pacific Bell parent SBC Communications Inc.

In the first acquisition by a sizable local phone company of a major Internet access provider, MFS Communications Co. said Tuesday that it has agreed to pay $2 billion for Uunet Technologies Inc. The planned purchase by upstart phone carrier MFS, based in Omaha, will broaden the market for advanced telephone and Internet services targeted at large businesses.
