A controversial "Star Wars" test, blocked for years by protests, lawsuits and even a hurricane, may take place as early as this week when missiles are launched from a dramatic, wind-swept beach on the island of Kauai. Opponents are holding a weekend vigil and plan to occupy part of the Nohili Dunes--an ancient Hawaiian burial site--to try to stop the launch, which could come as early as Monday.

A military rocket was launched Wednesday after poor weather conditions earlier had delayed the flight. The launch sent the strategic target system, or "STARS," missile above Earth's atmosphere.

Despite last-ditch efforts by protesters, the Army successfully launched a test of the "Star Wars" missile system Friday from a remote beach on the island of Kauai. The Army used helicopters and four-wheel-drive vehicles to clear a 1,700-acre "hazard zone" near the launch pad, but at least two people who were hiding in nearby dunes escaped detection, said Ken Stokes, a spokesman for the protesters.
