A drag racer was sentenced to Caltrans duty and placed on probation Monday after pleading no contest to criminal charges stemming from a May 9 race in Sun Valley. Mike Qualls, a spokesman with the Los Angeles city attorney's office, said an LAPD helicopter spotted three cars racing on Glenoaks Boulevard near Tuxford Street in the early morning hours. Ground patrol officers were called and arrested three people.

A dispute between two spectators at the Irwindale Speedway on Thursday night ended in a shooting that left one dead and two bystanders wounded. Leo Elder, 35, of Los Angeles died at a hospital after he was shot once in the back, police said. The suspect, Ramon Reyes, 20, was arrested in the parking lot and held on $1-million bail.
