On March 22, 2002, a young 24-year-old upstart named Josh Barnett scored the crowning achievement of his career. With a second-round TKO over Randy Couture, Barnett won the UFC heavyweight title in the main event of UFC's third ever Las Vegas event. At 13-1, it appeared that he would have a great many UFC main events in front of him. But that didn't happen. Remarkably, on August 31, the prodigal son returns for his next UFC fight over 11 years later. It's the longest-ever gap between UFC contests.

Herschel Walker used to tell friends at the University of Georgia that he aspired to be considered one of the greatest athletes in history. "And not just in football," Walker recalled this week. Since running the Bulldogs to the 1980 national championship and winning the Heisman Trophy in 1982, Walker rushed for more than 13,000 yards in the USFL and NFL, then retired in 1997 with the second-most all-purpose yards in NFL history. During his pro football career, he also earned a spot on the 1992 Olympic two-man bobsled team, and won television's "Superstars" event three times.

Renato "Babalu" Sobral wanted to prove he could win Wednesday night's Strikeforce main event against Robbie Lawler on his feet, and even when circumstances begged for Sobral to take the bout to the canvas, he stuck to the plan. A narrow, but unanimous, victory by decision was Sobral's reward. All three judges, Abe Belardo, Lester Griffin and Nelson Hamilton, gave Sobral a 29-28 edge in the three-round fight. The Costa Mesa fighter threw more than 100 punches to Lawler's total, and outkicked him by a near 10-to-1 margin to win the 195-pound catch-weight bout before 5,259 at L.A. Live's Nokia Theatre in downtown Los Angeles.

At its birth, mixed martial arts were a competition of fighters from different disciplines — boxing, wrestling, karate, kickboxing, jiujitsu — battling to establish which version of combat was best. Now, the sport of MMA can encompass all of those skills in one fight. In one fighter. "Guys have trained now in MMA from a younger age. They weren't a high school wrestler like me who had to learn the other aspects one by one," said veteran MMA fighter Dan Henderson, 41. One of the sport's latest advancements is personified by the new Strikeforce women's bantamweight champion, Ronda Rousey of Venice.

On Tuesday's UFC World Tour stop that included heavyweights preparing for their third meeting and two other title showdowns, the women sold their show the best. UFC champion Ronda Rousey and her Dec. 28 challenger Miesha Tate engaged in an entertaining back and forth at the Club Nokia stop in Los Angeles. “I see the chink in the armor of my opponent in that she won't look me in the eye,” Rousey said. Rousey, of Venice, previously submitted Tate like she has every other opponent -- via first-round armbar -- when they previously fought in the Strikeforce organization.

At this point of the labor dispute between the NHL and the NHL Players' Assn., everyone with any kind of interest in it - and that number might be dwindling - tries to read the tea leaves and find meaning in every twist and turn in what has been a baffling and tedious process. The league, which locked players out on Sept. 15, met with the union again Friday morning, the fourth straight day they have held negotiations. Good news, no? Maybe. And it's only a maybe because the union sent its members this memo , first reported by TSN's Darren Dreger, and it indicates how far apart the sides are and how great a gap remains between them this deep into the process.

A heavyweight fight between Fedor Emelianenko and Brock Lesnar is the bout most mixed martial arts fans want to see, but contractual obligations and medical problems are likely to prevent a showdown between the two for another year, Emelianenko's camp said Monday. Emelianenko survived a cut nose Saturday to retain his unofficial standing as the top MMA heavyweight in the world by defeating Brett Rogers in a second-round technical knockout. He closed the victory with a stand-up, right-handed punch, then pounced on Rogers to deliver a left-right combination on the canvas before the referee ended the fight.
