Holding an eight-stroke lead and 18 holes away from a second major title, Cristie Kerr wasn't about to declare victory in the LPGA Championship. "I can sit here and say, 'Give me the trophy now.' But it's not going to happen," Kerr said after shooting a 69 Saturday. "I've got one more round of golf to play." Kerr's focus was on display during a rain-soaked round at the Locust Hill Country Club in Pitttsford, N.Y., where she went to 13-under 203 entering the final round Sunday.

President Bush's mother remained in fair condition today at Greenwich Hospital near her Connecticut home, having suffered what doctors believe was a slight stroke, a hospital spokeswoman said. Dorothy Walker Bush, 87, continued to improve after undergoing a series of tests Tuesday, including a CT scan, a spinal tap, chest X-rays and a heart echogram, spokeswoman Mimi Grady said. Grady, who had not disclosed such details Tuesday, said Mrs. Bush was admitted to the hospital Monday night with "evidence of a slight thrombotic stroke involving her right leg, which was complicated by a temperature of 102 degrees."

An extra banana or helping of fresh broccoli a day could provide important protection against death from stroke, a new study by the UC San Diego School of Medicine indicates. The findings show that a diet high in potassium--commonly found in fresh fruits and vegetables--can lower the risk of stroke as much as 40%, regardless of other risk factors, Dr. Elizabeth Barrett-Connor, the study's co-author, said here Wednesday.

Los Angeles County Supervisor Kenneth Hahn waved thumbs up and bathed in an affectionate shower of public attention last August as he made his long-awaited return to the Board of Supervisors chambers after a disabling stroke. The illness had taken its toll, but his aides assured the public that the partially paralyzed and wheelchair-bound Hahn would start slowly and build himself back up.

An elderly man, apparently frustrated over the obstinacy of his stroke-crippled wife, shot and killed her on the path in front of their apartment in Brea early Wednesday morning, then shot himself. The man, identified by police as Walter John Prist, 73, died about 1 1/2 hours later in a hospital, police said. He had one bullet wound in his head and his wife Irene, 69, had two, the coroner's office said.
