The Galaxy's home stadium in Carson, formerly known as Home Depot Center, became StubHub Center on Saturday. Anschutz Entertainment Group, which built and owns the 125-acre complex on the campus of Cal State Dominguez Hills, had said in March that Home Depot was not extending its naming-rights deal and that a new pact was signed with ticket broker StubHub. The venue's 27,000-seat stadium is home to both the Galaxy and Chivas USA of Major League Soccer. Chivas USA plays there Saturday night against the Seattle Sounders.

There are two ways to look at UCLA's spring game. There's the cleats-on-the-ground view: "We need to make sure we lock into everything," safety Anthony Jefferson said. "We need to make sure we're assignment perfect. " And there's a coach's big-canvas brush strokes: "I wouldn't put stock at all in the results of a spring game, who plays well and who doesn't," Coach Jim Mora said. "It's just a piece to the puzzle. " The Bruins wrap up spring practice with a scrimmage at the StubHub Center on Saturday at 5 p.m. Mora said he wanted a "real game" and divided the teams along traditional lines - first-team offense against first-team defense, second-team offense against second-team defense.

On a run of winning world titles in three divisions during his last four fights, Southland boxer Abner Mares is moving toward his first world featherweight title defense Aug. 24 at Carson's newly named StubHub Center against former champion Jhonny Gonzalez. Mares' promoter, Richard Schaefer, told The Times on Friday that he's finalizing contracts for Mares (26-0-1, 14 knockouts) and the 31-year-old Gonzalez (54-8, 46 KOs). Schaefer said he's already won a purse bid over rival promoters Top Rank and Fernando Beltran of Mexico to place a super-bantamweight title fight on that same Aug. 24 card.

Keith Thurman has had 20 knockouts in 22 fights, which is eye-grabbing by itself, and now he'll have a Showtime and StubHub Center main event audience to boost his reputation. Thurman, a 25-year-old from Clearwater, Fla., will fight Coachella Valley veteran Julio Diaz on Saturday night in a welterweight bout that could springboard him into the conversation as Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s next opponent. “This victory itself, I don't know that it puts me into the Mayweather conversation, but being a top-10 welterweight puts me there,” Thurman said.

With the U.S. in the final stretch before this summer's World Cup, Coach Juergen Klinsmann has challenged his players to step up and make a statement if they want to make the team. Chris Wondolowski proved Saturday that he got the message, scoring goals in each half to lift the U.S. to a 2-0 win over South Korea before a sold-out crowd of 27,000 at StubHub Center. Whether that will be enough to earn him a seat on the plane to Brazil remains to be seen. But it sure didn't hurt his chances with Klinsmann, who admitted he came away impressed.

Josesito Lopez would one day like to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr., but the Riverside fighter in no way shares Mayweather's theory of boxing. While Mayweather has made a lucrative, unbeaten career of avoiding punishment in the ring, Lopez, 28, has arrived as a main-event fighter at StubHub Center in Carson - where on Saturday night he faces Argentina's hard-punching Marcos Maidana in a Showtime-televised welterweight bout - by unabashedly engaging in...

So what did we learn Sunday at the StubHub Center? Well, we learned the Galaxy, despite going winless in its first two games, is still one of Major League Soccer's elite teams. We learned that Chivas USA, despite losing just one of its first four games, is still a work in progress. And we learned that for Robbie Keane, the Galaxy forward born and bred in Ireland, a sunny 78-degree day is far from pleasant. “Robbie doesn't necessarily like these conditions,” Galaxy Coach Bruce Arena said.

Herbalife Ltd. said Thursday a new U.S. probe of the nutritional products maker would not affect its sponsorship of the Galaxy and other teams and athletes. The company, whose business practices have been publicly attacked by a Wall Street investment manager, said Wednesday it now was the subject of a civil probe by the Federal Trade Commission but provided no other details. Money manager Bill Ackman has alleged Herbalife, whose nutrition and weight-management products are sold by independent salespeople, is effectively a pyramid scheme.

Goodbye Home Depot, hello StubHub. Before the Los Angeles Galaxy soccer team takes the field Wednesday against the Portland Timbers, the sports facility that for the last decade bore the home improvement chain's name will be re-christened the StubHub Center. It marks the boldest move yet for one of the most recognized websites for buying sports and entertainment tickets to broaden its appeal outside the U.S. "Soccer is the key sport in the rest of the world," StubHub spokesman Glenn Lehrman said.
