In response to Marvin Brehm's letter ("Classroom Spending," Oct. 15): Perhaps he needs to return to school for some lessons in common sense. He quotes teachers' salaries and classroom supplies as not depleting the approximated $150,000 budget for a 30-student classroom. Of course, this statement fails to include expenditures such as student transportation, reduced-cost lunch programs and clerical staff, which only make up a fraction of the many expenses. Brehm's question regarding money in our schools should not be "Where has all the money gone?"

California slipped a notch in spending per public school pupil in 2011, falling to 35th among states in a year that marked the first overall drop across the nation in nearly four decades, the U.S. Census Bureau reported Tuesday. The 50 states and Washington, D.C., spent an average $10,560 per student in 2011, down 0.4%  from 2010, according to the report . Most of the top spenders were in the Northeast, while the lowest were in the South and West. New York ranked first, spending $19,076 per student, while Utah ranked last at $6,212.

In an effort to recover the cost of student transportation, the Brea Olinda Unified School Board will consider raising bus fees during a public hearing later this month. Bus riders and parents are being urged to attend the March 20 hearing. Trustees will discuss adopting a bus fee for elementary school children and increasing the fees for all other district students who already pay to ride the bus.

Parents will have to pay $180 a year to have their child ride the bus to Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District schools starting in the 1998-99 school year. District trustees voted Tuesday, 3 to 1, to revamp the district transportation system by charging a $1 per day busing fee and eliminating more than 80 bus stops. Board President Karin M. Freeman was absent; Trustee Roseann Thorn cast the dissenting vote.

A bill that would have allowed the Orange County Transit District and other public transit agencies to transport schoolchildren in dial-a-ride vans failed to survive a vote Tuesday in the state Senate Transportation Committee. Although the panel voted 4 to 3 in favor of the legislation offered by Assemblyman Gary A. Condit (D-Ceres), six votes were needed to send the bill to the Senate floor. Anaheim Republican John Seymour was one of three senators who voted to kill the bill.

City police, armed with lollipops, helped transport children to school Thursday in squad cars as a bus drivers' strike over safety concerns entered its fourth day. Mayor Joseph Paolino Jr. unveiled the emergency plan, dubbed Operation Lollipop, on Wednesday, saying that about 40 cruisers, three patrol wagons and five Fire Department cars would be used because of the limited number of school buses operating.

In an effort to save money, Brea-Olinda Unified School District trustees decided this week to eliminate school bus service for high school students and charge junior high school students $50 a year for transportation. By unanimous vote Monday night, trustees adopted the policy following a public hearing. Bus service for elementary school children will not be affected. Officials said they hope to save the district about $25,000 the first year; the policy will go into effect in September.

Bernie Tooksberry, general manager of Durham Transportation's terminal in Rosemead, which provides student transportation to school districts in the San Gabriel Valley, has received the Golden Merit Award from the National School Transportation Assn. for dedication to the safe transportation of schoolchildren. Tooksberry was honored for his excellence in service, safety programs and community responsibility.
