Having quizzed one such woman on the types of hair products she uses ("Are you moussed? Hair spray? What do you use? Spritzsomething?"), Murphy offers her own hair-grooming secret: "I've got the Freisenshine and a little mousse so if it rains I'll form that hard candy shell.

Food Share of Oxnard needs 2,000 frozen turkeys to give to families in need. The organization's "Food on Our Doorstep" program provides Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners for low-income and homeless families throughout Ventura County. Each year, Food Share--the regional food bank for Ventura County--collects and distributes about 2,000 turkeys.

Ventura County's Brown Bag Seniors Program is now available to more seniors countywide, thanks to an expansion of eligibility requirements. Food Share, the county's main food bank, currently provides a 13-pound bag of groceries each week to more than 1,500 seniors who have monthly incomes of less than $695 for one and less than $1,213 for two. Now, those over 60 who are making less than $915 for one and $1,700 for two are eligible to receive food.

Wildlife biologists opened the gate on a pen holding six Canadian gray wolves in Yellowstone National Park on Tuesday, but the predators were slow to accept their freedom. The biologists left food inside and outside the pen after opening the gate, and the wolves treated the activity as a regular feeding, Yellowstone spokeswoman Sue Consolo-Murphy said. The animals gathered at the opposite end of the pen from the humans.

The year's most extensive community food drive in Ventura County is set to kick off Monday and continue through Dec. 20. FOOD Share's 1999 Holiday Challenge begins with tours of the food bank and refreshments from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Food Bank warehouse, 4156 N. Southbank Road in Oxnard. Ventura County Sheriff Bob Brooks will return for the second year as honorary chairman.

Food Share, which operates a regional food bank in Ventura County, is now online with its own Web site, www.foodshare.com. The Internet site will focus on local and national hunger issues with information on upcoming events, food drives and opportunities to donate or volunteer. There will also be information on Food Share's hunger programs for children, families, seniors and the homeless.

Sitcoms have been sidling up to bars almost from TV's inception. Now comes Fox's "Costello," titled not after the South Boston tavern where much of this comedy takes place (the Bulldog), but after series lead Sue Costello. She plays barmaid Sue Murphy, whose six months of psychotherapy and decision to dump her big duh of a boyfriend, PJ, is utterly befuddling to her pals and family. Her desire to beef up her vocabulary by learning a word a day is the talk of the bar.
