Motor City-reared, Brooklyn-based Sufjan Stevens , whose new album is "The Age of Adz," brings his idiosyncratic electro-orchestral alt-folk to the Wiltern. The new album, his first all-song full-length since 2005's critically acclaimed "Illinois," draws its aesthetic strength from the work of Southern outsider artist Royal Robertson. Sufjan Stevens "Illinois" (Asthmatic Kitty) * * * * Following 2003's "Michigan," this is the second in New York singer-songwriter Stevens' proposed "The 50 States" album series. But even with 48 to go, he'll have trouble topping this homage to the Land of Lincoln. More dreamscape oratorio or impressionistic opera than conventional song cycle, this "Illinois" (due in stores Tuesday) is a state of Stevens' imaginative mind, and what a place it is.

SUFJAN STEVENS and his six backing musicians are wearing identical green T-shirts emblazoned with the words "Come on Feel the Illinoise" as they play a short set of his songs for a Southern California audience. The question is, why synchronize the wardrobe when they're performing on the radio? "I think it just helps us to feel kind of unified," Stevens says after the recent performance on KCRW-FM's "Morning Becomes Eclectic" program. "It puts us in the attitude of respect for our audience.

Annie Clark, the mastermind behind the ragged, theatrical indie-pop band St. Vincent, knows from non sequiturs. Horror movies always get their due in the buildup to Halloween, and costumes and candy take center stage when the holiday arrives. So let's hear it for the songs of Halloween, with their spooky choruses and winking references to the sinister occult. A survey from Billboard finds that an unsurprising track is the most popular Halloween song of them all: Michael Jackson's “Thriller,” with 3.4 million in digital sales alone. Add in the song's No. 4 peak on the Billboard Top 100 in 1984 and its revolutionary music video , and you have the undisputed king of Halloween music.
