Instant karma was gonna get Sugar Ray, and no rock band deserved it more. This was as boneheaded a bunch of uncouth exhibitionists as the Orange County music scene ever had belched up. Singer Mark McGrath was known for baiting audiences and spouting crude nonsense. He says that such impulsively idiotic moves as hurling filled cans of beer into concert crowds even earned him death threats during the band's early days.

Four years ago, only the most foolhardy gambler would have wagered on Sugar Ray's career continuing after the catchy strains of "Fly," its surprise 1997 hit single, faded from the pop airwaves. Yet the Southland band not merely has survived, it's thriving. "Sugar Ray," its fourth album and the follow-up to the multi-platinum "14:59," entered the national sales chart three weeks ago at No. 6, making it the group's highest-charting album yet.

Here's a brief look at the Calendar Weekend Class of '97: Ozomatli. The spirited 10-piece East L.A. group released its self-titled debut album on Almo Sounds in 1998 and has been busy touring with Carlos Santana and Dave Matthews, while spreading its Ozo-motley gospel on movie ("EDtv") and commercial (Mountain Dew) soundtracks. Sugar Ray. Even at their pre-fame live shows, Mark McGrath and company rocked the house (namely Dragonfly) with such dedication, they looked like prime-time players.
