A young man who tried unsuccessfully to kill himself by drinking a household bug killer set a fire in his apartment that gutted four other apartments in the building, officials said Wednesday. The fire raced through two levels of a three-story, wood frame building in the city's Mission District, causing an estimated $225,000 damage and leaving several residents of the building homeless, fire investigator Joe Daly said.
