Re "Brave new world of snooping," Editorial, June 7 Aldous Huxley works well, and let's not forget George Orwell. Covert intrusion - with wide and movable boundaries, we now learn - is not new and was not gradual. It landed without flash or thunder but with the figurative speed and apparently the moral scruples of a meteor strike. Several administrations have spied and lied - on comparably massive scales.

Taylor said that it was his wife, 81-year-old Gewynn Taylor, and that she had been dead since the sun went down that December day. He and Gewynn, his wife of 65 years, had a suicide pact, he said, and he had failed.

As investigators struggled through the day to make sense of the carnage on the railroad tracks in Mission Viejo, they considered the possibilities: a group of friends recovering from a night of heavy drinking, teenagers from a nearby park with a reputation as a midnight party spot, a suicide pact. But in the end, Orange County Sheriff's Department investigators said it appears a young man and teenage girl simply fell asleep on the tracks early Thursday before a Los Angeles-bound Metrolink train killed them, scattering body parts for hundreds of feet.

Re "Return to the rule of law," editorial, Dec. 18 Your editorial supported the restoration of the writ of habeas corpus to enemy combatants. No one can restore something that never existed in the first place. At no point in our history has the privilege of habeas corpus been extended to enemy combatants, whether they were from Iraq, Afghanistan, Yugoslavia, Haiti, Panama, Grenada, Vietnam, Korea, Germany, Japan, Italy, Spain, Mexico, Britain or even South Carolina. Our soldiers gave their lives for the freedom of Americans, not America's enemies.
