Duane Garrett, a Democratic activist prominent in politics from the presidential to local level, was found dead in the waters off the north tower of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, his associates and law enforcement officials confirmed Thursday. The death of the 49-year-old Garrett, who engendered respect and affection from veterans of all political stripes, was being investigated as a suicide, the California Highway Patrol said.

The boyfriend of a missing woman whose body was found along a remote coastal highway killed himself Tuesday, shortly after the body was identified, by jumping off the Bay Bridge, police said. The boyfriend, Darion Sable, had told police that Jerusha Briley, 20, disappeared Saturday morning while going to buy groceries for her 23-month-old son, Gabriel. Sable jumped off an approach to the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge on Tuesday afternoon, San Francisco police spokesman Dewayne Tully said.

A 15-year-old boy was found hanging in his bedroom a few hours after he watched an episode of "21 Jump Street" about a teen-age suicide, coroner's officials said in San Francisco. Michael Yee's mother told investigators that her son did not talk about the program or appear upset by it. She said she awoke a couple of hours later and, noticing his bedroom light on, found him sitting down and facing a chest of drawers with a belt around his neck tied to a knob on the top drawer.

Three women leaped to their deaths from the Golden Gate Bridge, including two who went over the railing moments apart, and a fourth woman was talked out of jumping, officials said Monday. "I don't believe any of them knew each other," said spokesman John Fenstermaker. "It's very strange. It's a strange coincidence." The two women who went off together Friday were identified Monday as Vanessa Chapman, 22, of Cotati, and Christine Bepp, 51, of Daly City.

For three years Ronald R. Berst tried to make peace with the AIDS virus despoiling his body, but finally he gave in. On the first day of summer, Berst drove from his West Hollywood home to Los Angeles International Airport, locked his car keys in the glove box and flew to San Francisco. There was a bittersweet Friday night dinner on June 21 with two sisters. On that Sunday, Berst walked part way across the Golden Gate Bridge and stepped over the side.

It's been three years since Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Deputy Ken Rushing watched 18-year-old Andrew Popp lean backward off the edge of Cold Spring Bridge and disappear into the fog-cloaked gorge below. The image pops into the veteran deputy's mind at odd moments, including when he was driving his children to Disneyland recently. "It got quiet in the car and I saw him again, right before he jumped," Rushing said. "He gave me a thousand-mile stare. He basically looked right through me.

Robert Boulanger has a vision of death. Not death in the abstract, but his own death. Or, more precisely, his suicide. It will happen in the morning: "I'm a morning person," he explains. The California sunlight will stream through his bay window, bathing his apartment in a warm glow. He will be surrounded by his paintings and his music; the crescendos and quiet strains of Richard Strauss' "An Alpine Symphony" will fill the room. He will be in bed, his body weakened by AIDS.
