Corning Inc. will receive $25 million from Sumitomo Electric Industries Ltd. as part of an out-of-court settlement of a 1984 patent infringement lawsuit, the companies announced today. In its third acquisition in as many weeks, Broadcom Corp. took another step Monday to expand into the fast-growing fiber-optic communications market, announcing a $1.3-billion acquisition of a neighboring Irvine company called NewPort Communications Inc. Privately held NewPort, a 4-year-old firm founded by engineers from Broadcom rival Conexant Systems Inc., designs chips that send information on fiber-optic networks.
