The Sun Belt Conference will ask the NCAA men's basketball rules committee to approve the use of instant replay on half- and game-ending shots only, beginning next season, according to Commissioner Vic Bubas. He said that if the committee will not implement use of replay as a national rules change, he hopes his conference will be allowed to use it on an experimental basis. With the rules committee being chaired by Gene Bartow, coach at Sun Belt member Alabama-Birmingham, Bubas may get his wish.

Southern Mississippi avoided its second consecutive winless season with a 62-27 victory on the road over Alabama Birmingham in a Conference USA game Saturday. Nick Mullens passed for 370 yards and a career-high five touchdowns as well as rushed for another score to lead the Eagles (1-11, 1-7 in conference play) to the win. Southern Miss avoided joining Kansas State (three times), Wisconsin (1967-68), Northwestern (1956-57), William & Mary (1912-13) and Tulane (1905-06) as major colleges with back-to-back winless seasons since 1900.

The Middle Tennessee women's basketball team spent most of Thursday grieving the stabbing death of teammate Tina Stewart and agonizing over the decision to play in the Sun Belt Conference tournament. They took every minute they could, then unanimously decided to continue their season. The Blue Raiders met with Athletic Director Chris Massaro and Coach Rick Insell before reaching the decision minutes before a news conference in Murfreesboro, Tenn. But Insell said the decision to play this weekend in Arkansas was solely the players'.

The Metro Conference, which lost four members to other leagues, added North Carolina Charlotte, South Florida and Virginia Commonwealth, all three formerly of the Sun Belt Conference. The three schools join Louisville, Southern Mississippi, Tulane and Virginia Tech in the Metro.

North Carolina Charlotte will host the 1989 Sun Belt Conference men's basketball tournament at its new 23,000-seat Coliseum, the conference announced Wednesday. Faculty and athletic directors from the eight-university league voted at their spring meeting here to award the seven-game tournament to the school for the first time since 1980, said league spokesman John Iamarino. New Mexico State and North Texas have agreed in principle to join the Sun Belt Conference after a conference call Thursday with presidents of the Sun Belt schools, sources said. New Mexico State and North Texas officials need only approval from their boards of directors to make the move official. That approval should come within a week. Two other Big West Conference schools, Utah State and Idaho, also were invited to join the Sun Belt as football schools.

Corey Robinson passed for 259 yards and three touchdowns, connecting twice with Tebiarus Gill , and Troy rolled to a 42-13 victory at Middle Tennessee on Tuesday night. The Trojans (3-2, 2-0) won their fifth straight against the Blue Raiders (2-3, 1-1) and their 12th consecutive Sun Belt Conference game. Troy led 21-0 with six minutes left in the first half. Middle Tennessee quarterback Dwight Dasher , making his season debut after serving a four-game suspension for accepting a $1,500 loan, ran for two touchdowns but couldn't rally the Blue Raiders.

Even as the Big West basketball coaches held their media day Wednesday, the conference continued to be reshaped. North Texas and New Mexico State officially accepted invitations to join the Sun Belt Conference in the fall of 2001, which will put an end to the Big West as a football conference. Meanwhile, Utah State and Idaho turned down the Sun Belt's offer to become football-only members.

The Sun Belt Conference is expected to announce today it is forming a football-playing conference for 2001 that includes Big West Conference members New Mexico State and North Texas. The announcement effectively ends the Big West as a football playing league in 2001 and opens the door for a realignment that could include Cal State Northridge. Idaho and Utah State declined to join the Sun Belt football-playing alignment and will remain in what will be an eight-school Big West.
