USC's final shot at making at least the score respectable ended on yet another poorly thrown Max Wittek pass and another nice play by Georgia Tech Quayshawn Nealy. The only difference this time was that instead of Wittek's pass hitting Nealy in the chest, the linebacker leaped up to tip the pass and Jamal Charles came up with the interception. Georgia Tech then ran out the clock for its 21-7 win, which ended a seven-game bowl losing streak. Wittek completed 14 of 37 passes for 107 yards and a touchdown with three interceptions.

UCLA fans have another talking point in making a case that they have taken ownership of football in Los Angeles. For the first time since 1998, the Bruins have finished higher in the rankings than USC. UCLA is 16 th in the Associated Press and USA Today coaches polls. USC is 19th in each poll. Adding up the check list in the Jim Mora era: Head-to-head: UCLA 2, USC 0 Sun Bowl victories: UCLA 1, USC 0 Pac-12 title games: UCLA 1, USC 0 Victories over Stanford: USC 1, UCLA 0 2014 Heisman candidates: UCLA 1, USC 0 Difference in poll ranking: UCLA plus 3 Then subtract ... Brett Hundley has decided to return to UCLA for his junior season of football. The quarterback was eligible to declare for the NFL draft, but his return to the Bruins makes UCLA a front-runner in next season's Pac-12 Conference championship race. The Times received confirmation of his decision from a person with knowledge of the situation who was not authorized to speak publicly about the matter. A news conference has been scheduled for 9 a.m. Monday to announce the decision.

USC, which opened the season ranked No. 1 in several polls, had hoped to spend its bowl week in South Florida preparing for the Bowl Championship Series title game. But a 7-5 finish will send the Trojans to Texas. USC will play Georgia Tech in the Hyundai Sun Bowl on Dec. 31 in El Paso, Texas, it was announced Sunday. This will be USC's second appearance in the Sun Bowl. In 1998, a USC team favored by 16 points lost to 6-5 Texas Christian, 28-19. Georgia Tech, which plays in the Atlantic Coast Conference, finished 6-7 after Saturday's 21-15 loss to No. 21 Florida State.

UCLA started the new decade in the 2000 Sun Bowl by carrying on a '90s tradition -- losing to Wisconsin in a bowl game. The Badgers beat the Bruins twice in the Rose Bowl, in the 1993 and 1998 seasons. In the 2000 Sun Bowl in El Paso, UCLA blew a 20-7 second-half lead and lost, 21-20. The Bruins lost quarterback Cory Paus, who broke a collarbone during the game. They also failed on a fake field-goal attempt in the fourth quarter, setting up the Badgers' game-winning touchdown.

Lane Kiffin finally made it official Thursday, announcing USC quarterback Matt Barkley will not play in the Sun Bowl. Redshirt freshman Max Wittek will start for the Trojans on Monday against Georgia Tech. Barkley suffered a shoulder sprain on Nov. 17 against UCLA and has not practiced since, but Kiffin had said the senior would be evaluated once the Trojans arrived in El Paso, Texas. Barkley did not practice Wednesday or Thursday, except to perform some conditioning drills. “Matt really wanted to play in the game and he was very close to being able to play and unfortunately for him our doctors have decided against it,” Kiffin said.

As part of Sun Bowl game activities in El Paso, Texas, USC and Georgia Tech are scheduled to visit Ft. Bliss on Thursday afternoon. The question: Will the Trojans be on time? They should be to help counter the perception they are lacking in social graces. On Wednesday night, the Trojans arrived about an hour late for a dinner that was to involve both teams and bowl officials. Georgia Tech Coach Paul Johnson and his team were leaving as the Trojans arrived. A USC athletic department spokesman said the Trojans' tardiness was because of their late arrival at the airport, which pushed back the start of practice and its return to the team hotel before departing for the dinner.

EL PASO - USC waited two years for a chance to play in a bowl game. But based on the Trojans' performance against Georgia Tech on Monday in the Sun Bowl, it might have been wise to have postponed it another year. Georgia Tech, which needed an NCAA waiver to play in a bowl, defeated USC , 21-7, sending the Trojans to their fifth loss in six games and a 7-6 finish. TIMELINE: College football 2012-13 bowl schedule It was, perhaps, an appropriate end to a lost season that began with the Trojans ranked No. 1. On a chilly, windy day, Georgia Tech held USC to its fewest points of the season and turned up the heat on Trojans Coach Lane Kiffin.

EL PASO - USC Coach Lane Kiffin, who delivered several apologies for missteps during the regular season, offered another Thursday for etiquette slips by the Trojans in the run-up to Monday's Sun Bowl against Georgia Tech. On Wednesday night, the Trojans arrived late for a kick-off dinner that was to involve both teams and bowl officials. Georgia Tech Coach Paul Johnson and his team were leaving as the Trojans arrived. The perceived slight, fueled by a photo of an empty dining room, became a hot topic on Twitter and news outlets.

Reading Bill Plaschke's column about Yasiel Puig (Dodgers at standstill as Puig speeds away, Dec. 30), one might be tempted to call Puig the Cuban Babe Ruth. If he hits 715 home runs for the Dodgers, I'll forgive him.   David H. Crocker Placentia :: It seems to me Yasiel Puig will not learn his lesson on obeying the speed zones in any state. In fact, Mr. Puig is not interested in listening to anyone. The only way the Dodgers can get his attention is by keeping him in the minors.

UCLA football Coach Jim Mora doused a Texas brush fire Friday morning. There were reports that Longhorns officials and Mora's representative were in discussions for Mora to replace Mack Brown as coach. Asked about the rumors, Mora said told the Los Angeles Times, “It is always flattering when someone is interested in you. But I am committed to being the UCLA coach.” Texas officials made contact with Mora's representative after Brown was fired on in mid-December. Mora told them he was not interested.

The most important huddle of the UCLA football season occurred long after a game, far from a field, in the center of a storm far greater than sport. On a Sunday afternoon, Sept. 8, at 2:30 p.m., UCLA's Jim Mora walked through the front door of the San Clemente home of the grieving family of Bruins receiver Nick Pasquale, who had died just hours earlier when hit by a motorist while walking home from a party. Mel Pasquale, Nick's father, remembers the exact time, the exact words, the exact tone of voice.

EL PASO - That, as the folks in the industry say, is a wrap. UCLA labored, even struggled at times, but in the end the Bruins had a glitzy Hollywood ending for the 2013 season. Quarterback Brett Hundley dipped and dodged on the field and off, leaving defenders in his wake along with the idea that he just might hop, skip and jump into the NFL draft. Linebacker Jordan Zumwalt appeared to be auditioning for the lead in the next Incredible Hulk movie. Zumwalt Smash? Linebacker Myles Jack scored another touchdown, this time while playing defense.

The holiday season has rarely been a joyful time for UCLA. The Bruins have won in only four of their last 14 bowl appearances heading into Tuesday's game against Virginia Tech in the Hyundai Sun Bowl. Staff writer Chris Foster examines the story lines: What's my line? It's far from a hot-topic item, and it's guaranteed not to trend on the Internet: UCLA's success on offense hinges on the play of its line. Will it be an Arizona State-like game, when quarterback Brett Hundley was sacked nine times?

EL PASO - The last day of 2013, the first step toward 2014. UCLA will play its final football game of the season Tuesday when the No. 17 Bruins meet Virginia Tech in the Hyundai Sun Bowl. But the game can be viewed as more of a beginning than an end for UCLA, which is seeking its first 10-win season since 2005. "We really look at the bowl game as the first game of next season," said Jake Brendel, UCLA's sophomore center. "Being able to go out there and perform well, that will spring us into 2014.

UCLA's offensive line began the season as a team strength and the Bruins expected big things from a talented and deep group. Injuries changed that. Guard Chris Joseph (knee) went down first, followed by fellow sophomore Brian Abraham (ankle). Next to go was veteran center Mike McCloskey (shoulder) and now his backup, Robert Chai, appears doubtful for Friday's Sun Bowl because of a knee injury.

No. 15 Washington State accepted an invitation to play in the Sun Bowl at El Paso on Dec. 31, contingent on the Cougars not being selected for a bowl championship series game. A 26-14 loss to Washington on Saturday dropped the Cougars (9-2, 6-2 in the Pacific 10) from No. 8 to No. 14 in the BCS standings. "Our players deserve to play in a bowl game of the Sun Bowl's status and prestige," Coach Mike Price said.

Stanford is back in the Rose Bowl for the second consecutive season, which is just fine with fifth-year senior linebacker Shayne Skov. Skov made eight tackles in last season's Rose Bowl victory over Wisconsin. This season, he has made 100 tackles, including 10 for losses. Stanford is playing in its fourth consecutive Bowl Championship Series bowl game. The Cardinal's five-year bowl run began in the 2009 Sun Bowl, its first postseason game since 2001. “We're all incredibly happy,” he said of playing in the 100 th Rose Bowl game against Michigan State.

Weird is the only way to describe UCLA's Sun Bowl visit in 2005. Extremely weird. But it was that kind of season. UCLA allowed 410 points, the most in school history, and won 10 games. It was fitting for it to end this way. -- Northwestern jumped to a 22-0 lead. And the Bruins won, 50-38. -- Quarterback Drew Olson, who had only three passes intercepted all season, had two picked off and returned for touchdowns in the first quarter. -- Maurice Jones-Drew injured his shoulder and had only 14 yards rushing and the Bruins still won, gaining 310 yards on the ground.
