Jeff Pendergraph, Arizona State's center, knew where he and his teammates were headed even before the Pacific 10 Conference tournament began. The plan now is to go there in style. The No. 23 Sun Devils were an NCAA tournament shoo-in and are looking to enter the field as a conference tournament champion. A 75-65 victory over No. 13 Washington on Friday put Arizona State in today's title game against USC at Staples Center.

There is no denying the marquee abilities UCLA freshman Zach LaVine can bring to a game. He gave a sparse crowd at Pauley Pavilion a peek of those Sunday. LaVine's 19 points in UCLA's 87-72 Pac-12 Conference victory over Arizona State won't jump off the stat sheet, as he was one of five Bruins in double figures. But what he did during an eight-minute stretch in the first half should get the chatter going around the water cooler. He scored 15 points to fuel a 20-8 run that gave UCLA (13-3 overall, 2-1 in Pac-12 play)

Jacquizz Rodgers finished with 145 yards and two touchdowns, and Ryan Katz passed for 260 yards and two touchdowns as host Oregon State (2-2, 1-0) held off Arizona State, 31-28, on Saturday. Rodgers eclipsed the 100-yard mark for the 16th time in his career, scoring on a four-yard run in the first half before breaking off on a 74-yard run to the end zone in the second half to put the game out of reach for Arizona State (2-3, 0-2). Following Rodgers' second touchdown, Arizona State pulled to within three points after the Sun Devils made a two-point conversion following a 21-yard run by Cameron Marshall with less than three minutes left in the game.

James Harden's awareness has grown considerably in the last year. The Arizona State guard knows when to sleep, knows when to eat, knows how to pay bills. The basketball hasn't been so bad either. Those were the things that kept Harden in school after a 2007-08 season rivaling that of any freshman in the country, a considerable achievement considering some of the high-profile first-year players competing in the Pacific 10 Conference a year ago.

Those gutsy little UCLA Bruins had nothing on this guy. Johnny Ruettiger, nephew of famed former Notre Dame defensive end Dan "Rudy" Ruettiger, created his own spine-tingling memory for Arizona State on Friday night. The center fielder drove in a pair of go-ahead runs with an eighth-inning triple at Jackie Robinson Stadium to spark the Sun Devils to a 5-1 victory in the opener of a three-game series between nationally ranked Pacific 10 Conference powers. With the score 1-1 in the eighth inning, UCLA Coach John Savage turned to his bullpen after Arizona State's Kole Calhoun stroked a leadoff double to right-center field off Bruins starter Gerrit Cole.

Reporting from Tempe, Ariz. UCLA continued to fight on. The Bruins were tossing passes around, trying to move the chains, challenging a fumble call. Basically, they were battling to the finish in the last minute. Then they were finished. UCLA fans can start mulling over season-ticket plans for 2011. Oh sure, the Bruins have one game left, a chance for some face saving by beating USC next Saturday. But a season with high expectations plummeted to the turf after Arizona State spotted the Bruins 17 points, then cruised to a 55-34 victory at Sun Devil Stadium on Friday.

Arizona State rushing leader Ryan Torain will miss the rest of the season because of a toe injury. Sun Devils Coach Dennis Erickson said Wednesday that the senior running back has either a dislocated or broken big toe, possibly both, from Saturday's victory over Washington. Torain had rushed for 553 yards and five touchdowns. Keegan Herring will replace him. Brigham Young offensive lineman Ray Feinga was suspended one game for violating undisclosed team rules. . . .

Two games into Pac-12 Conference play and UCLA already faces a make-or-break moment. After the Bruins lost to top-ranked Arizona on Thursday, Coach Steve Alford labeled Sunday's game against Arizona State "vital. " Vital, two games into a 16-game conference season? Well, he has a point, when the Bruins (12-3 overall, 1-1 Pac-12) face the Sun Devils (13-3, 2-1) in Pauley Pavilion. "There is a lot of season left, but when you're trying to stay in a conference race, teams that lose multiple home games, especially early, makes a difficult climb," Alford said.

After getting blown out by UCLA in its Pac-12 Conference opener, USC had a chance to regroup in preparation for games this week against the Arizona schools. Junior Byron Wesley said the Trojans went through some of their best practices of the season. Not much changed, however, in terms of results. Arizona State easily defeated USC, 79-60, on Thursday night at the Galen Center. BOX SCORE: Arizona State 79, USC 60 It was a season low in points for a USC program that was supposed to be energized by the up-tempo, high-flying style that helped put Coach Andy Enfield on the map at Florida Gulf Coast.

There were moments Thursday in which UCLA seemed to find its basketball program. For once, Pauley Pavilion wasn't better suited as a student study hall. Arizona, the top-ranked team in the nation, was teetering. UCLA was in an eight-clap frenzy and closing fast. Yet all the Bruins had in the end was stiff-upper-lip coach-speak after a 79-75 Pac-12 loss. "Those are strides," UCLA Coach Steve Alford said. "I would like those strides to be made in wins, but we have seen strides.

Myles Jack, UCLA's linebacker-turned-running back, is old news. Ishmael Adams was the new defensive player sparking the Bruins' offense Saturday in the 38-33 loss to Arizona State. Adams, a sophomore cornerback, returned kicks for the first time in his college career against the Sun Devils. He had 58- and 69-yard kickoff returns and a 49-yard punt return. Those were the set-up moments for all 13 of UCLA's points in the first half. “I think I did a pretty good job, but I had great blocking down field,” Adams said.

Five things to watch this week in college football: 1. Enjoy Thanksgiving dinner on Fox Sports 1 with Texas Tech at Texas in a game that will feature tight camera shots of Mack Brown and endless speculation about who might replace him as Texas coach. Hasn't Todd Graham put in enough time at Arizona State? He has been there nearly two years. 2. What a block party: Auburn fans saw their Tigers move up in the polls during a bye week while they positioned their recreational vehicles in the parking lot more than a week in advance of the biggest Iron Bowl.

UCLA's problems along the offensive line grew a little worse Saturday. Tackle Simon Goines broke a bone in his leg against Arizona State and underwent surgery Sunday. Goines' absence was not the sole reason the Sun Devils battered quarterback Brett Hundley in a 38-33 victory, but it was a contributing factor. The Sun Devils had nine sacks and flushed Hundley from the pocket on a number of other occasions. Out of that frying pan, into this fire: USC's defensive front may be on the same level as Arizona State's.

Ryan Kealy threw two touchdown passes and Arizona State's much-maligned defense held Oregon State to 14 yards rushing Saturday night as the Sun Devils beat the Beavers 24-3. Arizona State, 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the Pacific 10, sputtered much of the night on offense, with J.R. Redmond fumbling away the ball at the Oregon State 11 on one drive and failing to convert on fourth and one from the Beaver 20 on another.
